Monica used to prefer dogs, but after some months she has a cat I called Attila Junior in her house, she told me today that she was surprised about how company and intimate can cats become with men. And I replied yes, because you don't know about it until you actually lived with a cat, as cats are very reserved animals, they don't jump on the legs of the first new comer. You have to earn their confidence and trust and it may take months, but after you did, they become incredibly intimate and if you are able to listen to them, you can actually speak with them and not only to them - because they understand your words, so if there is failing communication with your cat is because you are not able to understand his words - listen attentively and after some time (1 or 2 years) you have learned your cat's vocabulary. I for instance now know every word in Melissa's speech, I know exactly what they mean - and she has developed quite a complicated vocabulary - no doubt because the task of communicating with a man has forced her to make her instinctual vocabulary evolve into more diversification than a cat living cat's life would normally use. For instance she has a word for when she calls me because she feels lonely - which is very different from when she calls me because she wants me to see something, for instance.

Nice thread guys. What about those of us who have a full house of both types - dogs and cats. Since I don't have many scanned in here's my start-
For those of you who haven't browed the best photos thread . . .

Here's Emmy - a 5 month old mini long-haired dachshund


Here she is with one of her people (my stepson at Christmas) and one of her cats - Dusty.


Yes I call them hers - appropriate for stubborn headstrong pup (as all dachshunds tend to be . . .)

I used to have a Siamese cat, she lived more than 25 years (this is minimum age we calculated, but she was probably older). She had her last kittenbirth at the age of 20.
But, Siamese are long living cats. European and Persian cats normally don't live as long.

The oldest confirmed domestic cat was 37 yrs old, mid - late teens is more normal. Mowgli is exceptionally sprightly for her age, she's only got a couple of teeth left, her irises are a little hazy and her black coat is more russet down her back but she's basically in very good shape. Samira who we adopted a few years back is 17-18 and very much showing her age. Her brother died late last year and sadly I doubt she will see the year out. I'll try and get some more photo's of them at the weekend.

I must have a go at photographing my step-sons pets but I've not attempted shooting aquaria...
