The new firmware works quite well with MF lenses.
However, anything above 90mm or very fast lenses shot wide open might be difficult to focus while handholding.

For the rest this might be the ideal solution for manual focus. Very Happy

I downloaded v4.

Just before focusing to "Nikon"

Focus to "Nikon", these letter brighten up.

It seems to work, not tested under the bright sun yet.
.....

I did test its new firmware under the sun, it seems work. You can clearly
see focused area.

that's great news for manual focus!

For those of you wondering; here's how it works.
You can set the colour (white, yellow, red) and the intensity/sensitivity (off, low, medium, high).
Low seems to be best for exact focus, high for manual focus in low light.

Better than a rangefinder, it's a fantastic feature. I only hope Samsung will add it to the nx cameras, or I will seriously have to think about switching to a NEX...

Upgraded ! It works , but I have to do some more tests .
After the first try , seems that the magnifier is unbeatable for critical focus.
But yes , a very useful feature ,wich I have to accustom with.

Yeah, you do not have to re-compose like RF cameras.

It is also good to test lens' curvature. Just focusing the flat surface,
the centre and the outer area lit up not the same time!! Or straight lines
will show you curved focusing area. I confirmed the both cases. Sad

Great idea Koji!

here is examples:

1. infamous CZ Distagon 25mm F2.8 ZF ... See yellow area is not lined up straight (only happens very close range near MFD distance)

2. Leica Macro-Elmarit-R 60mm F2.8 ... almost straight tough this is 60mm lens, only see small area (not fair comparison I think)

But anyway you can get an IDEA!

Downloaded it immediately, but did not have the time to try it.
Will do that today!

What an amazing update!!

I just tried V4 and it really rocks!

The new focus assist is fantastic for MF lenses and the other features are also pretty nice.

Thanks, Sony! That was worth all that waiting!

I can confirm focus peaking visible well even on strong sunlights. MANY THANKS TO SONY! I still wait for an external EV finder.

That will be the next NEX7's EVF I guess. This cam may sports 24MP!

I rather want NEX7 to have a crop factor better than 1.5, say 1.3,
of course more pixcel is OK for me. Very Happy

At dpreview there are some guys telling that after the update the NEX heats up much faster and the battery drain during photos seems to be higher too.

Can anyone confirm this ?

Wink

I had never problem with battery and booting of NEX, so I can't confirm it. It is a cute near perfect camera.

Maybe you didn´t notice this. Update V4 is very new. So perhaps you have a look on this within the next days.

I haven't noticed this (extra) battery drainage so far, will observe it more carefully.

Pana's original battery capacity is 1080 mAH, but my others are the both 1,500 mAH.
Maybe because of this I have not noticed it. Embarassed

I didn't find any trouble, works well. Peak focus confirmation works well with wide angle lenses. It didn't work with 135mm lens.
