I also watched Blunty and his Russian lenses. I remember there was a genuine sense of excitement from him. I've just had something similar after receiving my first collapsible lens. I've absolutely fallen in love with it. And now I want to try them all. There's always something new... umm, old to discover
And I have to go find out what a 'zoomer' is. I missed the manufacturers name, but anything that looks like it should have been in Metropolis, is worth hunting down for a look-see. |
There's a link in the notes above; Voigtlander Zoomar. |
Thanks. I missed it in the list.
EDIT: Ha! . It should have been in Metropolis. A bit of bare brass hanging off it and you'd have had to say steampunk. It really suits the Exakta in the pics. |

Johnny mentioned the Gary Winogrand documentary in his shout-out. He may already be aware, but in case he is not, Sasha Waters Freya, the maker of the documentary was interviewed on Ibarionex Perello's 'The candid frame' podcast a few weeks ago. Many of the issues that have been arising over the documentary were discussed, along with the decision making processes involved in going one way or another with them. Perhaps some of the issues Johnny said he had were covered there too. Just a thought.
http://www.ibarionex.net/thecandidframe/
Another for Johnny and it's a bit pedantic, but he started it by going into the properties of individual elements in a lens . From what I've read, if the Russians were using stocks of glass from Germany, post war, it may be fairer to say that it was Schott glass, from the Schott glass foundry, which was also appropriated, and may not be Zeiss per se. You can argue it's more or less the same thing as Schott was a subsidiary of Zeiss, but they weren't just making optics for Zeiss, but for other companies too, and that's the important part to bear in mind. If Johnny has read that there was stock earmarked for Zeiss appropriated at the Schott works, or stock at the Zeiss factory in Jena and used in the Jupiter range, I'd love to get a link or reference if he could find the time. My own knowledge is very sketchy as I'm just trying to research around this area at the moment myself, as I want to know a bit more about a FED 50 3.5 collapsible I've recently purchased and fell in love with. So far, from what I've dug up, I suspect that while my 1955 version is a close copy of the Elmar externally, internally it has Zeiss designed coating, Zeiss based arrangement of optics, and general Zeiss know how in the element manufacture. It's Zeiss inside. But I can't say where the glass came from. To be honest, and to date, I've not been able to find any primary evidence that any glass was appropriated from Schott or Zeiss and used in domestic lens manufacture by the russians, but as I say, that may be because I've not come across it yet. Vlad mentioned in one of the podcasts that up to 90% of soviet optical related manufacturing was military. So my gut feeling is that any good grade glass appropriated may have gone to that first. I live in hope of otherwise as it would be cool. Otto Schott funnily enough was one of the leading lights in the new science of glass modelling that Johnny began to talk about, starting with introducing Lithium to silica glass and taking it to Carl Zeiss for a look-see. Along with Ernst Abbe, they went on to found Schott glass making and what is now Schott AG.

EDIT: I've just discovered post-war ZK lenses and am back on the trail. As you were Johnny.

I couldn't help but notice this, because what Pentax claims and the actual history are quite different! Not only did they not have the first multi-layer coating on a consumer lens (that was Minolta in 1958 with the Super Rokkor 5cm F1.8 - to my knowledge), but SMC is not even their own invention, but a proprietary method (with special electronically controlled machinery) developed by OCLI - Optical Coating Laboratory Inc. out of California and sold to Pentax in the 1960's.
In fact, the best coatings available in the 1960's were on Fujifilm's (EBC) Cinema lenses, first sold in 1964, using 11 layers. The first SMC-labelled lens appeared in 1971. |

I would suggest you take a trip out to John Lewis in Exeter and have a play. I customised three of the custom buttons for easy and direct access to IBIS focal length, Magnify and Peaking, I rarely go into the menus for anything other than the format function. As for handling I got used to mine to the point that the camera gets completely out of my way.
If you were in A7 III territory, then I'd suggest you take a good look at a Z6, but for the money, an A7 II is a bit of a bargain compared to the competition especially if you primarily use old lenses. _________________ https://simonforsterphotographic.co.uk/
