Hey,
I had a chance to take out my Tair 11A, which I got from forum member No-X for a play.
This is my first outdoor session with a M42 lense. Actually, it's my first outdoor session with manual lens.
And it shows - i've missed focus on almost all photos. Taken with Nikon D80 and a cheap converter with a lense, which softens the photos. Some sharpening on postprocessing. All taken at F/2.8. Some taken with shutter as low as 1/100, so some hand shake there aswell. Some missed exposure, but taken in RAW, so I somewhat fixed it up. I'm waiting for a custom focusing screen, for now exact focusing is very difficult for me.

I have this lens with a pentax and I find it one of my easier to focus lenses. These still look pretty good to me, but with my work laptop I am not seeing OOF issues as much as just a slight overall softness. Could that be adaptor related?
And there-in lies my question. I have been considering a Nikon body (ironically for AF reasons), but I love my old m42 lenses. Is it true all the Nikon DSLRs need an adaptor with glass in it to correct for a lens/sensor distance issue?
If so, I imagine the quaility of the adaptor glass becomes pretty important. Are there varing quality differences in the adaptors? How expensive is a good Nikon to m42 adaptor?

This is an "A" mount lens. You can remove the M42 mount and replace it with the outer ring of a T2-Nikon F adapter. The lens now mounts directly and should focus to infinity. Someone (Farside ?) has shown pictures on this forum detailing the use of this type of adapter for a PK mount. There are also pictures (mine ?) showing the mount on a Jupiter 21A. You need to be careful about the make of T2-Nikon adapter. The one by KOOD works. So do some others - but not all. _________________ John |

Yes - although some would suggest that none are of sufficient quality.

The one by KOOD costs ~ 30GBP.
There are several earlier threads on this topic. _________________ John |

So far when I have tried to do searches on here about lenses I have been less than succesful with specific searches. I am sure that is my 'newbie' issue,m rather than a forum issue.
Again thanks for the help. _________________ Nothing a shot a jack and some George Jones can't fix - Gus |

Yep, that was me
They originally came with a Nikon A mount as a choice for the user - probably for the Russian Nikon mount (Kiev 19?). _________________ Dave - Moderator

I think Pentax is a good choice for M42 lenses.
The K20D will soon drop in price (some more -- it's at $700 now) due to the release of the K-7.
Weatherproof, in-body image stabilization also for M42 lenses, large viewfinder (D300 class), Live View so you can critically-focus. |

Yes, that's the one that I used. The adapter is a two part device. If you loosen three screws you can remove the inner part (which you don't need for this application). The M42 mount on the lens is removed by loosening three screws and is replaced by the Nikon F mount which you've just obtained from the adapter. Tighten the screws sufficiently for the lens to be mounted yet still allowing for rotation of the mount relative to the lens. Mount the lens, rotate until the scales are on top, and tighten the screws. It's quicker to do than describe. _________________ John |

hm, that one is quite expensive compared to other converters of the same type. I wonder, if others would work. Does this mod allow focusing to infinity without a lense? Would it work with Jupiter-37A? |

No apologies are necessary. If anything I should apologise for the terse nature of my reply. It was written at the end of a long day which I spent watching a very expensive boiler being installed - so no D700 for a while ! I think it's the nature of this forum, and others, that questions (and answers) are constantly being rediscovered. _________________ John |

Here are some "quick & dirty" pics of the Kood adapter..
Top left - the adapter does not have "KOOD" written on it but it's identical with those that do. I have two identical adapters, supplied from different reputable sources. Both were supplied as "Kood" but neither has the name written on it.
Top right - from underneath.
Middle - the 2 rings separaated - the outer one is the one you want.
Bottom left - outer ring from below.
Bottom right - outer ring side on.
I think that the adapter in the second ebay listing is different. The F bayonet appears to be on the inner ring. _________________ John |

Thanks, that's very informative.
Indeed, the one in my link seems to be wrong for this job.
This one - http://cgi.ebay.com/T2-T-MOUNT-adapter-for-Nikon-D40x-D60-D70-D80-D200-D300_W0QQitemZ190314525309QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLens_Accessories?hash=item2c4fa1327d&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=65%3A12%7C66%3A2%7C39%3A1%7C72%3A1205%7C240%3A1318%7C301%3A1%7C293%3A1%7C294%3A50 - on the other hand, seems to be exactly the same. Perhaps it would be possible to check if its same by the F bayonet fixage pin hole, which I don't see in your photo. Can you check please? This one's price is very very good, and shipment is free. |

If it focuses to infinity on an M42 camera withe the M42 mount it should give infinity on a Nikon F mount camera with the new T2-ring mount.
In connection with your earlier post - yes you can use it on a Jupiter 37A - also Jupiter 11A, Jupiter 21A and some others - Mir 10A and some of rhe mirror lenses (I think!) although I haven't tried these. _________________ John |

could you please check the last ebay listing I posted - does it look like the Kood adapter you have? it looks same to me, but is strangely cheap, and I'm not too sure how to know if its same. |

It certainly looks like the right one. The slot for the locking pin is in the right place relative to the bayonet lugs and the red alignment dot.
BTW ... to shown an ebay listing if you type
[Xbay]190314525309[/Xbay]
replacing the "X" by an "e", it will give you this..

Well, I bought two of them, and, bummer, they dont fit.
First of all, they are different from each other one is shorter, with different screw layout. But buth have internal hole diameter of 48mm, while A ending on the lenses have 49mm. So it wont slip over.
I hope I'll be able to find someone who can shave off 0,5mm of the inner wall of the adapter, and still make use of it. Should be possible, since the wall is pretty thick, with lots of room for screws to move. No idea if its possible to etch it without damaging its outer though.. |

Hi guys,
I'm new to forum and I just spotted this thread and it is discussing exactly what I am looking for. I know this is an OLD thread but..
I'm an avid user of my Tair 11a which I currently have adapted for my EOS bodies. However Ive just moved over to Nikon and have just realised that I can no longer use this lens without having to buy an optical adapter (which I wont do. Been there done that)
So, sorry if I've come late to the party but am I correct in thinking that my m42 Tair can be adapted for my nikon by modifying the Tair body with the outside element of this adapter? (URL at the bottom of page)
Sorry for the long URL!
I would love to be able to use this lens again as it has such amazing character for my video work.
Any help much appreciated!
Great forum too!
