Klaus was so nice to send me a copy of the Carl Zeiss Tevidon 2.8/70 in c-mount (Thanks, Klaus! The lens will travel back to you soon!), in order to check if it covers the APS-sensor of the NEX. So I decided to perform a little shoot-out of some nice short tele lenses.
Those were the contestants:
From the left:
* Carl Zeiss Tevidon 2.8/70 (c-mount)
* Leica Elmar 4/90 (M39LTM)
* Nikkor-H 1.8/85 (F mount)
* Schneider-Kreuznach Tele-Xenar 3.8/75 (Robot mount)
* Steinheil Culminar 2.8/85 VL (M42)
Nikkor-H 1.8/85 @ f/2.8 (stopped a little more than one stop):
I publish this comparision in the "oversized gallery" so that I can show bigger images.
I shot frames wide open and at f/5.6 (and with the Nikkor at f/2.8, because it is such a fast lens wide open).
Here are the first results (the full frame, wide open):
Carl Zeiss Tevidon 2.8/70
Leica Elmar 4/90
Nikkor-H 1.8/85
Nikkor-H 1.8/85@ f/2.8
Schneider-Kreuznach Tele-Xenar 3.8/75
Steinheil Culminar 2.8/85 VL
Well, there is not much difference, but the 100% crop show more:
Carl Zeiss Tevidon 2.8/70
Leica Elmar 4/90
Nikkor-H 1.8/85
Nikkor-H 1.8/85@ f/2.8
Schneider-Kreuznach Tele-Xenar 3.8/75
Steinheil Culminar 2.8/85 VL
The shots at f/5.6 are all very good. There is no reall point in showing them here.
Next part will be a bokeh comparison... _________________ Personal forum activity on pause every now and again (due to job obligations)!

My sharpness ranking:
1. Schneider-Kreuznach Tele-Xenar 3.8/75
2. Carl Zeiss Tevidon 2.8/70 (very close to #1)
3. Nikkor-H 1.8/85
4. Leica Elmar 4/90
5. Steinheil Culminar 2.8/85 VL (with considerable distance!)
The Steinheil with its "glow" can be used as an effect lens, really, rather than as a sharp close up. It produces fantastic portraits! _________________ Personal forum activity on pause every now and again (due to job obligations)!

I agree with the ranking of the Schneider-Kreuznach. That particular
image simply popped up as the superior overall quality of image. _________________

Yes, you may be right. I hadn't noticed at first. _________________

It's the Xenar for me too, I take on board the DOF comment but even so, it seems to separate the stamens (?) of the flower with much greater clarity than the rest?
