Sell? or modify and keep a Zeiss Sonnar T* 85mm f/2.8 Y/C

Sell it or keep it and modify to use with my Pentax K200D?
Keep it and do the mod. A lens like that for $5 doesn't come along every day.

Are you kidding? The mod is risky and you could ruin it's value. Sell it and pocket the profit.

Greetings all,
First post. I'm an old school film shooter who just got my first DSLR (a Pentax K200D). Using MF lenses on it was one of the big appeals to my choosing it.

Coincidentally, a few months earlier, I happened upon a Carl Zeiss Sonnar T* 85mm f/2.8 Y/C in mint condition for $5. (local store with photo dept. was closing out all their used lenses). When I saw the Zeiss name, I knew I had to have it, even though I knew nothing about it and have no Contax/Yashica mount cameras! I was delighted to learn it brings around $250 on eBay.

But now I find this:

so I have the possibility of using it on my K200D (with a M42 to K-mount adapter). The lens is widely regarded as superb.

and gives me an equivalent 127mm focal length, which is perfect for portraits.

Examples of images shot with the lens (and other Zeiss lenses) are freaking me out with their sharpness. The images almost appear 3D. I can't find a LOT of examples of images taken with it, but the ones I can find all appear to positively leap off the page, they are so sharp (like this one):

And this one: http://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/665854/999999

These aren't 85mm examples, but still the sharpness almost cuts you:

I found a comment on Flickr that it was one Canon shooters favorite lens (adapted to EOS).

Now I'm thinking maybe I'd be crazy to SELL it and am considering doing the mod. What do you think? Comments in addition to votes will be VERY welcome.

PS... your forum software is demon-possessed. It won't format URLs no matter how I do it. (And I administer web servers and forum software).

Nice to see you here! From now , you able to publish images and urls.
Mod only if necessary or you are pro in mod and lens will be in perfect condition. This is a damn good lens so be careful , take care of it.
If I am in your case I kept with Contax mount and buy a Canon or Olympus body to use it. A used E-300 only around 200 USD at keh.com. I use Olympus body for tele shoots and Pentax for normal and wide angle.
Another acceptable solution for me if you able to do professionally and lens looking later they came out from factory with P/K mount.

Don't hack it man! Buy a C/Y mount body for $20 and enjoy it as it was intended. With Film! Wink

Why hack a perfect lens when there are plenty of affordable Yashica cameras around on Ebay?

Use it with film and if you want to use it digitally, there are affordable EOS cameras such as the EOS 1000 which will allow you to use that and many other great Zeiss and Leica lenses .

Don't hack it, find a Y/C mount camera or sell it to me if you want to. Smile

James, Very nice shots. The colour is superb too.
