What would make a "good" portrait lens (at non-insane prices)?

the Biotar 75/1.4 goes for $600+

the adaptall costs as much as the lens itself Confused

for a total cost of $200, you can get a 180/2.8 CZJ Sonnar (there's one on ebay right now for $185 BIN).

what about the russian glass?

I used to be quite a fan of the Jupiter-9 but since discovering this forum it seems the J-9 is considered one of the worse lenses?

the tair-11 looks interesting.. and the kaleinar 100/2.8... and the volna-9 as well Very Happy

My favourite portrait lenses are, apart from some very nice 50mm lenses (on a crop cam great portrait lenses!) those:

- Nikkor-H 1.8/85
- Asahi Pentax Takumar 2.8/105
- Jupiter-9 2.0/85

and the Kaleinar 2.8/100 is also very nice.

And adapted to a DSLR, my (formerly Orio's) Volga-3 MC 2.8/80 Pentacon Six lens is excellent for portraits!

i'm interested in the Tair-11 and the Kaleinar 100/2.8 and the volna-9.

i've had the Jupiter-9 for a long time and i'm quite happy with it but seems to me the volna-9 has better bokeh...

any comments from someone who's used these? thanks..

Anyone used the Ennalyt 1.5/85mm for portraits??

I only used it for flowers shots so far and liked it a lot....

And how about the 1.8/85mm Takumar(s) and Nikkor 1.8/105mm?

The Volna-9 is a 50mm macro lens, very sharp and thus not primarily constructed for portraits. But then why not?

What constitute a good portraitlens? Seriously, I have doubts in "portraitlens" as a term.

PostPosted: Sat Aug 02, 2008 7:19 pm    Post subject: Reply with quote

someone says that s-makro-planar 2.8/60 is superb sharp lens, Mr. ORIO posted some example of amazing Makro-planar 2.8/100. It supposed to be good for portraits. But the prices are higher a bit Sad I saw one makro-planar 2.8/60 for 500 USD on eBay and 2.8/100 is more expensive...

portrait lens is a good term in my opinion 75-100mm range is portrait lens, well know and right. Even if you can make portrait with a 400mm lens too.

I used Takumars and Nikkor 1.8 both are great for portraits I found auto Takumar is less good than SMC for portraits even if auto perform very well in other areas. Unfortunately I never had chance to use Ennalyt 85mm.

Well yes, the focal range I get. But over and over I hear "thats a good portraitlens", but whats good? DOF? Bokeh? Sharpness? etc etc.

Be carefull with super sharp lenses ! A very few model has perfect skin. Super sharp lenses good for eyes, but for all portrait I like softer lenses.

With 50mm need to get to close to the model is this ok with own kids, but with an adult not such a good deal.

200 USD is nothing if you compare what Tamron SP 90mm f2.5 provide! Yes , this is an excellent portrait lens too.

No magic in lenses too if you like to use only cheap ones, result will be cheap too. This range as usual the best quality and expensive ones from every manufacturers. You can't produce same image with a Jupiter-9 even if a good lens than most expensive brothers. I tested many lenses in this range but none of cheap ones reach quality of higher priced ones.

Well, they say there is an exception to any rule, don't they? Wink
Although your thoughts are mostly right, Attila, I strongly believe that there are some cheap lenses that can produce some "magic"!

That is exciting in old lenses sometimes we can fond excellent ones for little money, but that is for sure this excellent ones never reach top Carl Zeiss or Leica quality this is my conclusion. That is another point of view for us need top lenses ?
