I was out testing some new stuff but I had my Pentax K10 with me and one of my favorite lenses - the Pentacon 30mm. As I came down the path to our house the sun was shining and I took a few shots using the catch in focus feature on the K10.
I've scraped a bit of paint off the back of the Pentacon that allows the focusing setting to be on AF.S with the camera on Manual, then as the camera picks up the focus it fires the shutter. I either turn the focusing ring, or slowly move the camera forward, until it fires.
I find it a very useful method, and remarkably good. The hit rate is way higher that I get hand holding and setting the focus manually.
All these pictures are shot at ISO 100

1/60 Probably f8 ( using regular focusing methods )

1/500 wide open at f3.5

1/90 wide open at f3.5

1/180 wide open at f3.5

I love this lens, it's reliable. I get consistent results from it, and the results please me. I haven't PP'd those pictures at all except for a very slight increase in brightness on the crop shot of the 'old mans beard' - the full size is untouched, I took a range of shots to get the white flower exposed and to avoid blowing it out with the strong sunlight.
The colours are good, and honest, and the bokeh is good but not riotous.

If you haven't got one of these classics - why not ? But be quick, a couple of years ago I passed on buying them because I already had two and I paid less than £5 ( UK pounds ) for each of them. Now, they're fetching £40.

Another fan of the lens here. By far my most used lens. It's the only one I've shot with Underground since I purchased it (and by far the best £20 I have ever spent on a lens!)

Is this one REALLY the meyer lydith in disquise ? If so I think I want one too. I don't have a 28ish mm lens that really does well at infinity. I like my Tak but just not at a distance. This one seems to excel at at.

Well I have 2 28mm lenses both for pentax and no shortage of pentax bodies Smile What I am really looking for is a nice sharp at infinity 28mm for my old H3v that I could also use on my Kmount bodies. I have the S-m-c Tak 28 and a JCpenny 28/2.8 in Kmount that was sharper than my SMC- M 28/2.8 so I sold the M and kept the Jc penny.

I really prefer m42 lenses so that I can use them on all my bodies But I'm not totally against your suggestion by any means Smile

Eric

I believe it is the Meyer Lydith, everything I've read about it seems to confirm it anyway.

I've also got a Takumar 28 f3.5 and this Pentacon is easily as sharp, and I think it shows more contrast and saturation on the colours as well. I certainly use it more than my Takumar and a Tokina made Soligor 35mm.

Thanks a million ! This version is much easier to locate for me so I'm going to give it a go. Frankly on my dslr I don't really care but for film I really think it might help.

It is the Meyer Lydith, identical apart from lettering on front.

It was my workhorse lens for landscape work until I got the Hexanon 3.5/28 which is better, but the Pentacon is no slouch and very well built.

I had the SMC Takumar 28 f3.5 on the K10 today, the Pentacon wins. Shocked

I have to admit most posted pics I've compared lead me to believe the same thing. But I will reserve judgement until I can see my wet print results firsthand. I really have nothing against my Tak from 20 feet in. Just never crisp beyond that. Now my old auto tak 35 is a COMPLETELY different story Smile

Hey Erkie, I posted a few here: http://forum.mflenses.com/viewtopic,p,1187284.html#1187284

I'm surprisingly pleased with this lens. Before playing with it I thought "Oh, 3.5 is too slow" but as it turns out, it's not. And the character is really quite nice! I now understand why so many of you keep this as your go-to lens Smile

Very good lens and samples !

Is it far better than the Pantacon 2.8/29mm ?

If you get a bad copy for sure, Pentacon 29mm has worst quality check from all, if you have a good copy perhaps same.

One thing I really like about this lens is the way it handles reds, I'm not sure who mentioned it the other day but they said that bright reds seem to give most lenses trouble, the colour bleeds and often looks blurred. And it's something that I agree with, I've seen it on many of my lenses, but not this Pentacon.
This is completely untouched except for resizing, and I think the crop shows a very good rendition of the red.

Thanks for the post ! Glad to see yours has arrived.

I just realized they are preset aperture lenses ! A big plus for me, I just prefer them to auto lenses.

I agree completely. I use my pentax smc F 35-70 for anything with lots of red because of this. This lens is looking better all the time!
