Hello,
Today I acquired a mint Rokkor-X PG 50 1.4 that I would like to convert to EOS. I spent the weekend researching conversion methods however I have not been able to locate one specifically for this lens.
At the moment I'm reluctant to disassemble this lens further than I have in the picture below.
I suppose my goal is to mount the EOS adapter I have to this lens. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks for the quick response. The one thing I'm noticing is that this lens doesn't have exposed screws on the rear like the other lenses, which is causing the confusion. I did email Jim though and he suggested he could do the modication for ~$100 plus shipping which seems like a good deal. Now the deciding factor is going to be if this lens is as sharp as a contax 50 1.7. Anyone know? |

I don't know for sure but I would put my money on the Planar being the sharper of the two. _________________ 500D / SPII / FTn / Contax D / 137MA / Contaflex

on a crop like the 500D all 50mm look the same
look what a contax 50:1.7 can do on full frame

According to Ken Rockwell, this lens is sharper than the nikkor 50 f1.4?

This is certainly not true.
Take a look in this thread:
http://forum.mflenses.com/super-takumar-50mm-f1-4-or-rokkor-58mm-1-4-t28217.html
You can see the MC Rokkor-PG 50mm F1.4 there. |

hi dnas! I like your test and they are very pro
but you have to understand that you are just testing the sensor
when you check 'borders' on you G1, you test the ability of this sensor to gather light at a angle
if a lens is more telecentric, it will show better in your test
on the 5DII, full frame border are better than the crop 'border' of the 40D, just because the microlenses of the 5DII are better
if you want to see what a lens can do, only film can help
look this test, a 50:1.4 score 250 lp/mm at f/2, and 320 lp/mm at 2.8
a lens is a investment for years, not for a sensor technologies outdated every year |
But then, you said that all 50mm F1.4 lenses look the same on a 500D, but they don't, do they? |

of course they are differences, otherwise collecting manual focus lenses would be boring _________________ T* |

poilu, one other point about the tests.
You said (I think) that most of the lack of sharpness is due to the lack (or variety) of telecentricity between the different lenses, is that right?
Or were you saying that the variety of telecentricity between the different lenses has enough variation, that you cannot tell the real performance of the lenses compared to each other?
With regard to the stopping down of the Takumar lens, the corners get sharper as you stop them down.(because of the restriction of the peripheral rays by the aperture blades, leading to less aberration from the edges of the lens.)
I think that the test is still valid, because the MAJORITY of the aberration is due to the lens itself and not the micro lenses in the sensor, in my opinion. The reason I say this, is that the rays following the extremities from the rear lens element (for example) are more parallel to the axis than the rays coming from more towards the centre.
(I will try to make a diagram to show what I mean) |

CJWolff,
To convert MC Rokkor-PG 50/1.4 to EF-mount by yourself is much harder than to convert
MC Rokkor-PF 58/1.4 lens, I would recommend to ask JimBuchanan at "fmiranda" BBS.
The both lenses are quite sharp except at their wide open, you can
see their lpmm performances in here > http://www.pbase.com/kkawakami/rokkor_lens_resolutions
Sorry they are in japanese, but you can understand them since they are all universal numbers.
IMO, PG 50/1.4 is better lens and it shares the same optical design with its bigger brother PG 58/1.2 at 1973,
their coating is the same, so is their bokeh.
MC ROkkor-PG 50/1.4 @wide open (acceptably sharp, MFD = 50cm)
