Cheapest lens , well good results still ! The contrast is very good , and also the colors. That made me change my mind also as for buying the 5d II when the prices will go down a bit _________________ Happy owner and user of :

Poilu, your shots are beautiful.
I like your places very much.
No ashes in the air from iceland volcanos until now ?
Mixed with Sahara sands, it should make a very good basis for special concretes. _________________ Olivier - Moderator

on the 40D, the 1.7 was bad but on film I liked it
on 5DII rendering of the 1.7 is good
most people don't realize that even a distagon 35:1.4 on crop cannot give the result of a 50:1.7 on full frame
the 1.4 have more CA, more halo and more distortion than the 1.7
the 1.4 have better highlight shapes and give a smoother bookeh
on a crop, the 1.4 is always better, on full frame 1.7 is good if not too busy background with highlights
here is a yesterday shot with the 50:1.4 wide open, not same light so it seems more saturated

until now on the 40D crop I used only the 1.4
on a crop 3D is rare and random, but I liked the 1.4 for his beautiful bokeh
I have to play more with the 1.7 as it shows a more film rendering on the 5DII
but I have a problem, all contax are so good on the 5DII that I cannot find a favorite
it is a pity to use those lens on a crop or m4:3 _________________ T* |

The wide open sharpness is ok, I'll grant you that, but where is the nice bokeh?...The DOF at f1.7 is so deep its useless for anything other than shots of buildings and flowerpots. |
