Might as well check now if anyone has a real name, address or phone number. Then you're all set ready for when the holidays are over (no point contacting until the new year now).

If Martyn were still alive it seems to me that he could reasonably ask Saffer Steve to return the lenses so that he could make alternative arrangements for their disposal - I'm guessing here since I don't know the details of any agreement between the two parties and I'm not a lawyer. However the proper person to act for Martyn might be his executor/executrix. Why don't you find him or her and ask for advice ?

Thats not a bad shout Sichko, I may first ask the Sue Ryder people by email for their advice on this. They must have experience of this sort of situation.
My view is they either get bits and bobs of cash and the grief of accounting or, they get the whole collection as should have happened in the first place.

Steve.

Anyone got any idea as to the probable value of these lenses or want to have a stab at a valuation. i would imagine that would impact on how Sue Ryder will advise us.

PostPosted: Mon Dec 16, 2013 3:13 pm    Post subject: Reply with quote

In my opinion only the helios 40 and canon FL 55 1.2 are expensive lenses. 200+

Some of the mirror and the canon 50 1.4 between 60-100 GBP

The rest i believe are around 5-30 GBP

Some lenses i don't know so i cant think of a price but at least from what i have bought and sell is my opinion.

What are you going to ask them ? And what if they ask you some questions : Who are you ? What is your interest in this matter ? Whom do you represent ? On whose authority ? Who has title to the lenses ? Did Martyn leave a will ? Have you talked with Martyn's executor ? .........

PostPosted: Mon Dec 16, 2013 5:58 pm    Post subject: Reply with quote

To answer that in order Sichko

I will ask them for their opinion of what I propose to do, requesting them to advise me of any problems I may face.

I will answer any questions with full disclosure of who I am, where I live and confirm that my motivation is to see the right thing done and be seen to be done by anyone, on this website or any other means deemed appropriate. But, primarily by me!

(I was a five year old, my father died, all his tools vanished in a cloud of bullshit, he was a master craftsman, as am I!)
This is a morality dear to me!

I hope I represent what is right.

My own authority, as a nightmare to anyone who would disrespect a mans last wishes.

Sue Ryder will get these lenses.

Don't know, but there is a lot of evidenced intent on this website.

No, and theres the rub, a can of worms to upset Martins widow and loved ones.

Steve.

Many here are understandably concerned about the fate of Martyn’s lenses – the poor man decided to leave his lens collection to a charity and it is important that his desires be respected. I fear this concern is blinding some of us to some important facts though, the most important of which is that no one here knows anything about the reasons why Saffersteve has not been in touch. We know he’s had a very difficult time and I think we can agree that such difficulties are not of a nature to come and go from one day or week to the next.

I don’t wish to make excuses for Saffersteve. My point is that we are in complete darkness. Given that, I think it is unfair to blame Saffersteve for anything. While no one here has accused him of anything outright, the somewhat zealous and impatient tone of some posts on this thread doesn’t leave much to the imagination. Some comments have also been rather patronizing. I find this hasty and rather unjust.

I think that for as long as contact with Saffersteve has not been established, reaching out directly to Sue Rider would be highly unethical. Such a move would amount to going behind Saffersteve’s back in order to do something Martyn entrusted him to do, not us. Much worse, such a move would be an implicit accusation directed at Saffersteve and would do harm to his good name, undeservedly far all anyone here may know. This would be a terrible outcome – not one I think Martyn would have accepted in order to get his lenses to Sue Ryder.

In his last post, Sichko raised a valid point with his theoretical questions: Why would Sue Ryder wish to discuss someone’s private business with unknown persons from the other side of the world? For them do so would be highly irresponsible and, in all likelihood, illegal. For the same reason, my bank manager doesn't discuss my finances with some anonymous caller. I am not questioning your motives Bychance, I can relate to your experience with your father, and I also think a man’s last wishes are sacrosanct, but the people at Sue Ryder have no idea who you are and their obvious question will be “what’s your interest in all this?”, supposing they agree to talk to begin with.

For now, I think it would be wiser if we took a few steps back, forgot about the lenses for a while, and concentrated on establishing some facts. At this stage, given some of the proposals voiced here, we are treading on very shaky moral and legal ground IMO.

I agree with Konica that it would be good to be a bit more sensitive. However, I do understand people's frustration.

I've done a little digging, and just to summarize a bit of info.

saffersteve's full name should be Stephen Saffer (he signs off as this, and Martyn who met him also called him this). He lives in Caterham in Surrey.

Regarding sold lenses, he used this account and the list of lenses sold does appear here: http://feedback.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewFeedback2&userid=leo_ann81&ftab=FeedbackAsSeller

You can cross reference with the list he has here: http://forum.mflenses.com/martyns-lens-t61339.html#1341765

Price discrepancies are probably to do with postage. The last lens was sold in late Oct - and that corresponds with Steve's recent silence. Let's hope nothing else bad has happened.

All info above can be found in these forums, so I don't think I'm doing anything unjust.

Attila the admin will have access to his full e-mail address, and that might be the first port of call - but it would be unfair to publish it openly. Having someone's full name and location is enough to locate someone's address or contact details for very little expense on the internet. Let's hope it doesn't come to that. We're just trying to fulfill Martyn's last wishes, and reduce the burden on Steve - not invade someone's privacy.

If Attila PM's me his last login ip, it should be possible to verify that the town is correct. He can do it himself even using a myriad of geolocate services.

Hope this helps.

Impressive list of lenses!
I'm sorry to hear about your wifes cry for help...I've been there myself and was lucky to find my own cure via trial and error. Happy as Larry these days, so it must work!
1) St Johns Wort (take 1 SJW tablet on the first day symptoms show and reduced to 1/2 tablet the next day then stop taking it altogether by the 3-4th day. (the reason for this is SJZ can cause temporary acne like symptoms on the face if taken for too long, its only side-effect)
2) Star Flower Oil (take 1 SFO capsule along with the SJW tablet from the start of the treatment and keep taking for 3-4 days at least, or until symptoms disappear. (Evening Primrose Oil, which is more easily available, can be used as a substitute but you may need to double the dose as SFO capsules are a far more concentrated source (104mg per capsule) of the wonder oil "GLA" (Gamma Linolenic Acid)...SFO is available from Tescos stores in the UK, but unfortunately I have no idea where else it can be obtained.

St Johns Wort is excellent for most people, but do check beforehand
that it doesn't adversely interact with other medicines being taken.

The problem is the addictive drugs prescribed by Doctors which have side effects such as constipation...My advice is don't take them and stick to my treatment instead.

St John's Wort sent me into anaphylactic shock, it damn near killed me.

Be VERY careful about taking any medicines, allergic reactions can come from seemingly benign medicines and potions. Feverfew did the same to me as well. I know wasp stings send me into anaphylactic shock , and nuts make me bad. I guess there's something in some of these herbal remedies that do it as well?

GPs in recent times seem to have been making (or been told to make) some rather disconcerting decisions where prescriptions are concerned. For example the hyping of statins (while glossing over potential memory loss), or the widespread and questionably appropriate prescription of amitriptyline (seriously bad side effects for a lot of people).
One reference book that's almost essential nowadays is http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/1405361794/ref=oh_details_o02_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Btw, I've been taking st Johns Wort for years; found that on me it's had a useful side-effect -- used to sunburn quite rapidly, but that changed to quick tanning and not burning (which is the opposite of what's said to often happen).

That's very interesting!...I have very fair skin so anything that can help me tan easily would be welcome.

It might work, or might go the opposite way (increased tendency to burn, which is supposedly more normal).
So best to test cautiously at first.

Right, I have just spoken to Sue Ryder head Office and the guy I spoke to will be sending me an email to post on here explaining their wishes and advice. I gave him the link to this forum and this thread so that he can see the delicate nature of Saffer Steve's situation. I understand that They have their own ebay shop that they would sell the lenses through and in fact would be happy to collect them directly from Steve. I made it abundantly clear that Steve has great support and sympathy here and that all members will give any help they can to help them contact Steve directly and resolve this as sensitively as possible.

I await his email and maybe his posting on here directly.

If you are reading this Saffer Steve, a lot of good hearted help is on its way mate.

Take care

Steve.
