Thanks Carsten - I did post it earlier in the thread but later removed it as I was a bit embarrassed and didn't want any "gearism" comments like what you sometimes get on other sites.
Then I figured, what the hell - everyone here posts their collections, large or small so why not me?
And so here it is.... |

Pah, that's usually jealousy and sour grapes, I wouldn't worry about it.

I find the gear lists dead useful, for it's handy to know what experience other members have with a particular cam or lens or some other kit. With the wide collections in toto of gear on here there's not much that isn't covered. _________________ Dave - Moderator

Hello everybody
I'm new here, and I've register because I'm tired of USM canon lenses ^_^
Just kidding, I love USM, but when taking close up pictures I never use the AF... (and the FTM of those lens come in good help when I'm lazy to switch off the AF).
Anyway, I'm on Canon like you could have tell, and I want to use MF lenses on it for two very different reasons:
-the canon wide angles are expensive and not very sharp, compared to what I've seen with zeiss, olumpus, nikon and leica lenses... I need something cheap AND that can give me something very detailed on the whole image on a Fullframe (I'm getting a 5D soon), at least when it's stopped down, and why not even wide open? (but in a leasser exstand of course, and it's not my priority
-the canon macro are very nice, but sooo pricey. And anyway I don't need AF for macro... I've checked the prices of MF macro lenses, and even if I have to buy an adapter for them to work, they are still WAY less expensive than canon's...
For macro and close ups, I'm interested in 100/135 mm focal ranges, as it will be to use on a 5D
Anyway, all this to ask:
almost all of you own a LOT of lenses, and know how their value and prices, so I would want to have some advice... (for now I'm trying to buy some lenses to make my own idea on the difference between Oly and Zeiss lenses, to see what render I like the most, but I think I will like both in a different way ... For now I prefer the Oly because they tend to be cheaper, and no mirror assles...)
I know I will buy at least either Zeiss planar 50mm f1.4 or the 1.7 (the 1.4 are more expensive and i've read that the 1.7 version were actually a little bit sharper at the same apertures, however it must vary from lens to lens, and the 1.4 obviously have the capacity of having thiner DOF wide open, and unlike my canon f1.4, won't be silly soft on the corner even at 1.4... and also the 1.4 is reported to have no problem with 5D, when the 1.7 is reported to foul the mirror in some cases with F16 white models (what I've found on ebay so far)), depends if I can find the 1.4 at a good price And if I can find a 1.7 for very low price, I would get both
Is it a good choice? from what I've head, people seemed to agree that it's one of the best lens available for cheap. Look far better than the canon f1.8 mkI or mkII...
But maybe there is also good alternatives
Anyway I think for the price, I can't go wrong, at least for the 1.7, they are sold very cheap
Also I lure for Y
For the wide angles I am not sure... the olympus are sold far cheaper than the zeiss, so I'm giving a try with Oly, I've spoted a zuiko 28mm f2.8... I've heard good things about them... and they are very cheap...
I've heard wonderful things about the zuiko 21mm, but couldn't find any
And as I'm most likely going to get a OM adapter for EOS, I think I will also get a 50mm f1.8, they look like good lenses, not as sharp as the zeiss but the render is different, and they also are sold at very insanely low prices...
For the macro work, I'ld like something like 100/135/200... I think primes is the way to go, but I may be wrong (I already own a Canon 85 f1.8, the only Canon lens I'm totally satisfied with, and on a FF it's going to be the focal lenght I will use the most, so I'm definitly not selling it... unlike the 50mm f1.4... I don't use 30mm for portraits very often on my 30D, so no need for USM AF at 50mm on the 5D... I would rather get some fun lens for static compositions and landscapes)
I've spoted some cheap Zeiss Jena Sonar 135mm f2.8 and f3.5... both seems nice... but I couldn't get much info about those...
Anyway, so my bottom line is that there is A LOT of choice... so I would like to learn from YOUR experiences
What lens should I avoid/be cautious (like serial numbers to avoid etc.)
And what are you favorite lenses if you have
The things to consider is that:
1) For now, I will keep my budget lower than 100€ per lens (there is a lot of great MF lenses that are cheap, so for now I keep big expenses for Canon Zoom I need AF with.... but I know I will spend more later on MF when i will be warmed up with cheaper lenses and anyway I have yet to determine my need. Like do I prefer leica or zuiko or zeiss or whatever)
2) I will use a 5D. If some people of you are aware of one lens I've mentioned to be incompatible with canon or 5D (for 5D it's mirror issues, but for canon there is also infinity assles), let me know
3) I'm most likely to get something like the Canon 24-105 F4L and 70-200 F4L... I know it can sound like a sacrilege to talk about AF lenses here but those lenses are very good, especially the 70-200, and I just want to mention them because the MF lenses I am searching for will have to perform better than those lenses or have something original, otherwise it will be pretty useless... the 70-200 F4L will be used mostly in MF anyway...
Ok, sorry it's a long post and I maybe should have creat a new topic (if that's the case tell me), but anyway, thank you to answer all my newbie questions
I know about photography but not so much about lenses other than the ones I've tried... (for exemple I know that I liked my Minolta 50mm 1.7 better than the canon 1.8 of my friend, the Canon f1.4 is sweet but it's 6 time the price I've paid for the minolta...) _________________ Thierry Brouard, Thirrouard Koa!

Hi, NikonD! Welcome aboard.
Since you are shooting with an APS-DSLR (1.5 crop), your collections seems very sensible. I still think you need a nice super wide angle (18-21mm non-fisheye) to cover the wide angle shots.
Unfortunately, these are very expensive. For your Nikon, I think an "old" Nikkor such as the 3.5/20 AI would be the best choice.
And you should definitely get a nice 50ish mm lens, e.g. the Nikkor 1.4/50 AI. This one will work as a fantastic portrait glas. _________________ Personal forum activity on pause every now and again (due to job obligations)!

Love it, even though my copy isn't in such a mint condition it does what it promises. Lovely bokeh and perhaps the sharpest lens I have in my collection. Very usable wide open.
Had some wide-open samples with it over there:
