Quite a few of the heated discussions encountered in the hobby/profession of photography result from the failure to recognise that it can be enjoyed at many different levels, by people who come to it with widely differing objectives.

FWIW, in terms of general membership attitude this forum seems pretty good compared to some others, considering it has minimal moderation.

I note that response rate to each post is recently sparse, meanwhile daily usage of the forum and views of each post grow. Does it indicate a new generation of manual lens amateurs coming, while people do not dare or do not feel relevant to share their MFL experience? If this is the case, people please do not hesitate to share your test shots and experience. This makes always pleasure to see others to share the same passion and to resolve common questions and issues.

At any given time of day or night, there are usually at least 100 or so viewing, and maybe 2 or 3 people actually logged in.
High lurker count, or bot activity? You never know these days.

I'll agree on one thing at least- forum activity has been very slow for the past few months.
Maybe this place will get busy again with the swing into summer weather.

A specialist macro forum I subscribed to has had no activity in recent months apart from me uploading images.

2 cents from an average user ( first manual lens 2011, joined 2015, first post 2022 )

Everyone who collected manual lenses or cameras knows about this page already, I myself have been following it since I started.
It is a great source of information, absolutely love it, tons of useful info on one single page.
I am not contributing much because everything important has already been mentioned in past threads it seems.
Imagine this from a newbie perspective: "I have found this awesome lens Pancolar, do you know about it?" "You do?" "600+ threads...ok"

Nowadays there are more comfy ways. For interacting facebook or other social platforms ( dont use them ) or flickr if you are interested how a lens renders and what can be expected of it.
Maybe something like weekly challenges or shooting one month with certain brand/model could spark more interest, to make it more immersive.

@alex_ph Notice how in this thread you return here almost exactly the same time each year since 2021? Smile A Springtime cycle for you and mflenses?

@Doc Sharptail Many bots, yes; also many people browsing the sub-forums. The server logs show activity has increased. Yes, if past years are any indication, as the weather warms in late Spring this place will get "busy" again as always.

Also of note is the return of long-time members, some not heard from in years.

There is always something interesting happening here. Always something to add to old posts.

I get what you're saying... I was thinking the same for some time. Thought I don't have a lot to contribute, if so much has been mentioned yet. Now - a couple of years later - I'm interested in a couple of topics and lenses, there might not be a single mention of here or on any other specialized MF forum online... there's always something new to discover, adapt or experiment with (if that's what you want)! But if something like that is not for you, remember: No one else has shot a Helios-44 or Trioplan with your eyes, mind and view on things yet... so it's always worth it to contribute, even if you don't have anything to add in terms of technical details. Just show some images or add your experiences.

And if it's more about the gear/collecting aspect for you - you can always show off your lenses/cameras in creative ways 😉:

I peruse the forum nearly every day though I mostly just read the forum anymore. After several failures loading images I discovered I couldn't just pop the chip into my tablet select and post because my a7riv image files are too large. Resizing just to post is quite time consuming for me and I just can't seem to find the time. Anybody know a good android photo editor that's not too expensive?

The simple editing suite in Google Photos should be good enough for online posts.
And it's free

Similar situation with m/s Win 10- after the image is saved to photo's (that's the common file destination), it can be easily re-sized, by simply right clicking on the image and following the prompts to re-size. It takes longer to tell it than to actually do it.
I use 1024 wide or smaller for this page, and have found nothing slow about it.

I can't find any resize in Google photos. Help says download to computer where can easily resize.

Nice to hear Win Tablet can be used like a computer -- I've decided Android tablets are for web browsing, streaming, and looking at photos, and occasionally as a smartphone extension for quick short email and chat, bluetooth keyboard and track pad are little help. Like trying to put square peg in too small hole.

Besides uploading here, photos uploaded elsewhere can be linked here. Problem with that is moving the photo there breaks the link here...

Not on a tablet here- win 10 on an older business class HP notebook laptop computer, which has more capacity than any desktop I've ever had.

Just noticed tonight that the site is now secured.

Whoo Turtle

I don't use the forum uploader, which is a slow process.
I use imgur, and just post photo's here from that site- it's much faster.

Oh!, then probably Win Tablets being touch-screen operation-based have similar usage limitations as Android Tablets. The point is to use a computer for computing stuff, Tablets and Smartphones for looking and simple interactions with the data imho.

There is an announcement about the https upgrade https://forum.mflenses.com/site-on-https-t85146.html

I realize the convenience of pop in the chip & upload directly here if it worked for larger files...there should be an Android app to select a bunch of jpeg (or .ARM) files on the card & resize (& convert) right there on the device...somebody here with a similar workflow (using Tablet) would know...

For example your Foxglove image on that site
Code:
[img]https://www.e-group.uk.net/forum/filedata/fetch?id=978489&d=1716881751&type=large[/img]

won't work on this version of PHPbb (2.2) -- works fine on version 3.3...the url here in 2.2 needs to end with .jpg, .gif, etc., webm doesn't work here either. That may be simple for Attila to fix. I'll ask him!

I have no experience with Android (I don't trust a Google OS), but I can say Apple's IOS is a frustrating OS to work with as far as manipulating data is concerned. I rarely use my iPhone; I always wait until I have a desktop computer to work with. The traditional desktop OS models still run circles around the mobile OSes.

I have always been a little bemused by the keyboard add-ons you can buy for tablets. You basically end up with a thin laptop again, but one where the motherboard and battery are contained behind the screen, and with a crippled OS. Rolling Eyes

IF and WHEN you are an Internet photographer, thus posting online, you don't need more than a 16mb camera.

Pretty much, yes.

I only take photographs for myself, and only watch them on a square 1920 x 1920 pixel monitor. Plus I don't feel the urge to pixel-peep. 12MP SONY A7S serves me fine for that; a 12MP sensor with AA filter has the added advantage that most legacy lenses are perfectly usable, even the ones that have a less than stellar reputation.

Whilst I follow some of the posts about lens sharpness with interest, in practice it is not something that affects my photographic preferences very much.

Things would be different if I were a professional photographer shooting for a variety of print media.

wait .. what ?

where did you lost those 4mb from your sony ? were they not 16mb, that Mk1 ?

btw, shooting for print media ..

well when i was still on the film, a good friend photographer got a new cutting edge Fuji Pro s1.

Imagine 6mb, being a pro & selling pics for print.

Kodak DCS 100 (1991)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kodak_DCS_100

Quote:
Aimed at the photo journalism market in order to improve the speed with which photographs could be transmitted back to the studio or newsroom, the DCS had a resolution of 1.3 megapixels.

I saw some nice 8x10 full-face portraits that looked as good as film from arms distance.

Sharpness at full aperture is of no relevance to my photography so I take little interest in such images, unless the colour rendering appeals.

No, the SONY A7S (first generation "S") has a 12.2MP sensor (12.2 MP Exmor CMOS, 4240 × 2832 pixels). The camera is by no means perfect, but it serves me well.
