I recently got interested in old MF lenses and today I remembered that my father gave me a couple of film cameras with lenses a few years ago.
These were the lenses I found:
Fuji 55/2.2
Asahi Auto-Takumar 35/3.5
Leica Elmaron 150/2.8
Pentacon MC Auto 29/2.8
Elicar Automatic 200/3.5
All the lenses seem to be in pretty good shape, considered some of them were lying unprotected in the bag they were in. They were quite dirty but were free from any major scratches. I believe the lenses are M42 since they fit into the Fujica camera, but I can't say for sure since I am a novice in photography and my M42 adapter for my 400D hasn't arrived yet. The Leica lens seem to be incomplete. Seem to be a projection lens, as revealed by a simple google search (no idea what it is though).
I also found a Nikon EM, but no matching lens, as well as two Pentax battery grips. This makes no sense since there were no Pentax cameras. My father might have more stuff though...
Anyways... I just wanted to share my findings with you and hopefully get some feedback on some of these lenses. Are they keepers or crap? |

Well, unfortunately I can't try them right now since I have no adapter for my 400D yet (on its way I hope).
I also discovered a sad thing. The aperture blades of all the lenses except the 200mm Elicar seems to be broken. The Pentacon 29mm opens from 2.8 to 4 but stops there. All others seem to be permanently wide open. Is there some way to fix this?
EDIT: I managed to open the Pentacon and fix the blades, the other lenses show no obvious way to open them... |

What happens if you set them to f/16 or 22 and press the pin on the screw-mount (the pin projecting from the screw) ?
It could be they are either auto-only or set to "auto". You won't see the diaphragm opening if so, unless the pin is pressed.
The Elmaron is I believe a slide projector lens. A nice beginning for a "Viejo" type project ! _________________ I like Pentax DSLR's, Exaktas, M42 bodies of all kinds, strange and cheap Japanese lenses, and am dabbling in medium format/Speed Graphic work. |

Great, it worked! I feel a little stupid now, but I'm totally new with these lenses.
However, the Pentacon strangely was actually "broken". The spring had come loose from the pin that controlled the blades.
I really hope I get my adapter soon so I can try them out. |

Don't worry about it - nearly everybody does that the first time they encounter the stop-down pin. _________________ Dave - Moderator

I had a S-M-C Takumar in a cupboard for 6 months thinking it was stuck on Auto until I finally mounted it... and realized there's a tiny pin that pushes in to release the auto-manual switch. Somehow I was convinced the aperture blades weren't moving at all. The only two things wrong with the lens: the bit of barrel that contains the distance dot / dof chart isn't screwed down well, and the stupidity of the owner. _________________ -Jussi

Hi Nesster,
That @%$#@ pin !
The very same thing happened to me with my (then-new) Takumar !
I was hugely disappointed ! For a while.
Well, that was thirty years ago. I'm sure I won't make that sort of mistake again (no, I'm not sure at all). _________________ I like Pentax DSLR's, Exaktas, M42 bodies of all kinds, strange and cheap Japanese lenses, and am dabbling in medium format/Speed Graphic work. |

How about MY stupidity? I found a "bottom of the box" Soligor 35-70 that the seller had thrown in a box from eBay. I saw the A/M switch, but didn't even TRY to work the switch to see what it might do. So..I went for several days wondering if the aperture blades were fouled up, only to finally accidently move the A/M switch and REALIZE that it actually switched the aperture movement to manual. Now THAT's pretty dumb! (just don't tell anyone on MFLenses.com, okay?) _________________

I found another lens today, an Ozunon 70-200/3.8-4.8 lens that fits my Nikon EM. Will this lens work on my 400D if I buy one of those Nikon->EOS AF confirm adapters on Ebay? This lens was new in box. Apparently a friend had bought it in Spain in 1987 (I wasn't even born yet) but never used it. |
