I now seem to be embarked on a course of acquiring flashes
Hot on the heels of the Metz 45 CT-4, I've now gone and bought a used Metz 40 MZ-2, just to use a connector that came last week. Crazy rationale, but hey, it works for me.
The handy thing is - with a 3702 adapter foot, and the connector cable and the Metz gun, I get nearly TTL flash on the Pentax - or as good as.
The adapter takes camera info, sends it to the gun, and the gun knows what aperture and ISO the camera is at, and the gun's own quench circuit controls the flash duration to suit, just as if the camera had done it.
In essence, it's no more than thyristor controlled flash, but it's what Metz described as 'Smart Auto', it being aware of the camera settings, unlike more basic thyristor guns.
Just like TTL, it becomes P&S flash, which is handy from time to time, and it's much more compact than the 45. The 45 is a wonderful piece of kit, but lugging it around all the time would rapidly turn into a pain in the butt.
I can see a pattern forming here - there's no shortage of older Metz guns of various sizes and most of them still have many years of use left in them. _________________ Dave - Moderator

That's in interesting looking one - probably the forerunner of the 45 CT series. It was one of those that I recall lusting after when they first appeared, but the price at the time was just way over the top. _________________ Dave - Moderator

It's hard to tell on the net how big things are...how bulky are these old flashes? Do you have something to compare it to size wise? _________________ Moira, Moderator

In Dave's other thread, there was a Metz, along with some other flashes, that give you an idea of scale.
