I really prefer prime lenses and I have a nice collection built up. But for a series of films where I have very little time to shoot many set-ups, I looked into a zoom lens. The most loved, almost cult now, is the 35-70 CY but I found the spread not enough.
So I started looking at the 28-85. That size covers most of what I use as primes. All the reports and reviews were very positive, but always mentioned "the weight".
I found a very nice one in HK and payed 300 Euros for it. It had a small dent in the filterring, but I had that taken out professionally.
What a GREAT lens! It matches the other Contaxes perfectly in color, contrast and sharpness and even the 3D is up to par with the primes. On the 28 side it starts to show it is a zoom with it's compromises, but if I want to go that wide I will use my 25/2.8 or the lovely 18/4.
No it is not a plastic leightweight piece of equipment, but yes, it is a beautifully built, great working, fantastic perfomer.
Very underrated I am sure.
So, here are some very different examples.
All on Canon 5dMkII. No PP except some crops and a little exposure here and there.....
