Hi
Can anyone recommend a reasonably priced 35-70 zoom that performs well.
I've seen Hoya, Miranda, Pentacon but also Tokina, Canon, Olympus etc.
Are there any surprising candidates that give a good bang for the buck?
Thanks.

What camera are you planning to use it with?

It's not manual focus, but I'd reccomend the Minolta AF 35-70/4 Macro "mini-beercan", it's an amazing performer - for my taste - and I see many go for around 50-60 euros.

I need manual focus as using adapted with M4/3.
Hoping to soon get an APS-C sized mirrorless.

Then, Minolta MD 35-70/3.5

I once again vote for Minolta MD 35-70/3.5 Macro. It's incredible and great.

Another vote for the Minolta/Leica MD 35-70/3.5 - the macro version. It's my everyday lens on the NEX.

The Tokina RMC 4/28-85 is a very good lens, but huge. Too big for a µ4/3 cam!

My personal recommendations are:

+ Tamron SP 2.8-3.8/35-80: amazing lens but hard to find for little money
+ Tamron 3.5/35-70: smaller than the 35-80 and almost as good.
+ Soligor C/D 2.5-3.5/35-70: A big surprise! Pretty amazing lens without reputation, though. And ever so fast! Also bulky.

And I am selling a Soligor 3.5-45/35-70 M42 for peanuts Wink

Soligor 3.5-45/35-70 M42................................... C+, fully working...............................................20,- plus P&P

Perhaps worth a try?

Many thanks for your replies. It never amazes me reading on MFL forums how quickly the information and advice flows.
It seems from this mini poll that you can't go wrong with a Minolta MD Macro. Just got to find one now!
Any ideas what a current fair price for this lens is? I know condition is a factor but a ball park figure would give me a starting point.
Thanks

You might be lucky and find one for £30, certainly don't pay over £50, and try to find one with
the dedicated hood and original caps. Better to look for low-start auctions rather than
Buy-it-Nows. There are a few sellers who set ridiculous prices for BIN items in the hope some
gormless idiot will come along and pay what they're asking.

And make sure you find the right lens. This one has constant f3.5 aperture, there is a poorer
version, I think it's 3.5-4.5. There are macro and non-macro versions but the macro is more
common I think. We don't reckon there is any optical difference between the two, except for
the minimum focus distance of course. If you find one you want to bid on, you're welcome to
send me a PM if you need help with identification.

I have the non macro version of that Minolta 35-70, its a great lens. I had in past, Tokina 35-70/4 which is great too at the same price

I have both version of Olympus 35-70mm fix 3.6 and variable aperture ones I love both.
35-70 not a difficult range I think all good brand like Minolta, Tamron, Nikon, Olympus etc works well.

Vivitar Series 1 35-85 F2.8.

Another vote for the Minolta 35-70 f3.5 lens, and i'm a m4/3 user. Smile

+1 for Minolta 35-70 F3.5. So much sharper and longer reach than my Kit NEX Zoom (pixel peaking has so much detail!) - shame about the lack of width on a crop sensor!

Got mine with a nice Minolta X-300 camera in mint condition for 25 squid (got mullered by Postage from Switzerland to HK though!). Dying to try it soon with the original Full-Frame film size!

I also have a fairly sharp Yashica ML 28-85 that has a more useful range on APS-C than the Minolta but I use the Minolta more due to lovely colours, Bokeh (especially on Macro mode) and sharpness!

Konica Zoom-Hexanon UC 45-100 is a stunning lens if you don't mind losing a bit at the wide end, as good as many primes and better than any other zoom I've tried.

Olympus 35-70/3.6. It's a sharp, nice lens, parfocal (stays focused when you zoom) and constant aperture. Make sure the hood is included; it's an interesting design where the hood works at its deepest when the lens is at tele ens, and becomes shallower when the lens is zoomed to wide end. The same design is employed in Canon 24-70/2.8.
