first post, looks like a great forum!

Unfortunately, I come with bad news. The other day, my wonderful and loved CZJ 135/3.5 literally fell apart in my hands while I was focusing to infinity. Don't know what happened, but it's in for repairs, which will take a month. Unfortunately, I don't have anything in the 135mm range to take its place.

I'm wondering if somebody could maybe give me some suggestions as to what I could use to fill the void. I'm looking for sharpness more than anything (will also be used with a 2x teleconverter). I've considered just buying another CZJ, but I'm not sure how much I would want to have 2 once this one is repaired, but it's what I may end up doing anyways.

I'm looking for lenses in the M42 mount, thanks!

the S-M-C (Super-Multi-Coated)Takumar 135mm 3.5 is very sharp and actually pretty easy to find like places such as ebay and can be had for about 60 USD. maybe a bit more if it has the original case and lens hood. I have this lens (I paid 100 USD for lens, case and hood) and its quite sharp even wide open, sharp as a tack stopped down. excellent Pentax build quality and butter smooth focus throw. they weren't loved as much as the 2.8's but always kept so they are plentiful in nearly mint condition. that's my suggestion. here is some examples by the lens (not mine) in the MFL forum gallery: http://www.mflenses.com/gallery/v/japenese/takumar/smc_takumar_135mm_f3_5/

what camera will you be using it on?

I will be using it on a Canon 30d as well as a Praktica L.

Hi Dave,

Welcome to the crew. Sorry about the Jena.

I would suggest basically any Takumar 135. Amazingly sharp, lots of them around and not too expensive. I use it on my 30D also.

Jules

If you decide on the Pentax Takumar, go for the Super Multi Coated (S-M-C) version if you can find it, otherwise the older Super Takumar is as good. I have both and they are both equally Tak sharp. The only difference I can tell is in the coating and better resistance to flare, if you shoot direct to lightsource. Otherwise both are sweet little sharp and buttery smooth operation lens. The S-M-C tend to be a little more expensive comparatively.

HI, DAVE

I think that you can buy a CZJ 135/3,5 but zebra version. It's cheap and you can't find other lens much similar to yours MC CZJ.

Somebody posted here saying that the zebra version is sharpest than the MC. May be, why not? You can know this with little money.

Good luck. Rino.

My all time favourite lens is the zebra sonnar. Here is some pics with it:

Did you compare the zebra with the MC? Have pics?

Rino.

MC:
http://www.369.hu/369hu.php?l=hu&m=1&p=1&a=63 most of them in this categorie.

MC has better colors, less flare Zebra is sharper and better bokeh. All picture is modified in Gimp or Lightroom, sorry no origins now.

Welcome aboard Dave...One slightly annoying thing is this forum has a rule that you can only post images up to 900 pixels wide but apart from that its a pretty good place to hang out. Wink

Have you considerd the Sigma-made Sigmatel/Spiratone/Sun YS 135mm f1.8?
I picked my Sigmatel Scalematic up on ebay in YS-Minolta mount (MD) but that was useless to me so simply bought an YS-M42 adapter to instantly convert it to M42 mount...Including the postage the Sigmatel cost under £60.
Despite its fast speed its not very heavy and its well made too.
Here are some unsharpened handheld samples...

Thanks for the input, unfortunately a lot of those lenses aren't immediately available where I live, and I'm looking for something to hold me over (starting this evening already!).

My options for immediate gratification are as follows (unless I decide to be more patient, or if it doesn't clear up today!):

TAIR-11A 135/2.8
Zeiss 135/2.8
LUXON MC 135mm F2.8 (??????)
Takumar SMC 135/3,5

or another copy of my sonnar... the Luxon I have never heard of before, and would appreciate some input, also wondering about the Zeiss 2.8, maybe that extra stop would be nice?

PostPosted: Wed Sep 17, 2008 8:43 am    Post subject: Reply with quote

Luxon an "unknown" lens 99% chance you will get a weak lens.
2.8 Sonnar has Contax or Praktica B mount.
With Contax mount slightly better than 3.5 , with Praktica B mount slightly weaker.

That's right, can't believe I didn't realize that when I saw it in a picture with a B mount praktica. Probably end up going with the takumar!

Takumar is a right choice, you will like it same than Sonnar I guess.

you wont be disappointed going with a Takumar. some of the finest lenses ever made.

get the tair!!!

More expensive than the tak, but its got a lot of character.

I must say the tak, while mechanically good (far better than the CZJ i have...) is a humorless lens. Sharp, yes, flare resistant, yes... But the CZJ has more character.

The CZJ and tak arent that far apart, my tak is sharper than my CZJ but the color cast from the CZJ is more pleasing. So when you get the CZJ back you may feel the tak is redundant. Or you'll be so pleased with the tak's mechanical solidity you wont use the CZJ anymore...

Better be different and get the tair Smile i want one...

The Tair is cheaper than the Tak where I live, but then again, the prices are all messed up here...

orly_andico

You speak very well of the Tair, but you have a takumar and a CZJ. Wink

Dave

CZJ 3,5 zebra has a mechanism that hasn't the takumar, when you focus close the blades open to continue with the same F/.

It's a very smart system, and MC lost this.

I vote for CZJ, zebra if you want it cheaper, MC if you prefer the wanderfull colors of the last Zeiss.

Regards, Rino.
