Do not take seriously these comparison shots, the good comparison is
extremely difficult and time consuming as you know. (just an excuse Very Happy)

By using EOS_5D on the tripod, the both lenses required adapters.
No USM was applied in these shots, but used Auto-balance for exposures
of RAW developer Capture One 4.7 (latest version).

FLowers and berries are artificial ones, but leaf is real (i think Very Happy).

ML100 @ f3.5 @ 44cm 1:2

MP100 @ f3.5 1:2

ML100 @ f3.5 1:2

MP100 @ f3.5 1:2

ML100 @ f3.5 1:2

MP100 @ f3.5 1:2

I could not see any difference easily except FoV is wider for Makro-Planar despite
this lens seems to have deeper DoF than ML 100/3.5 macro lens. Interesting too.

So once again, grab Yashica ML100/3.5 macro if you can.

Excellent results Koji, I guess you discovered some hidden gem!

Great that I followed your advice and jumped when I saw that one here!! Arigato Domo!

Nice samples ! Many thanks! Another evidence how Yashica lenses can be good!

nice test Koji
how do you improve your focus on the 5D, any new magnifier or split screen ?

PostPosted: Fri Apr 03, 2009 11:46 am    Post subject: Reply with quote

Thanks guys.

Poilu, I am still using Ee-S screen and DIY DK-17M magnifier for my 5D. That's all.

I have not much used this Yashica lens so far, but it is very nice indeed.
It was almost comparable to C/Y Sonnar 100/3.5 I thought, now MP100/2!!
I am not sure I should be grad or not. Very Happy

I don't have the Yashica macro but it looks like a terrific lens.

As for the Sonnar 3.5/100, my two copies are both significantly sharper than my Makro-Planar 100 - which however has other qualities, the bokeh, the 3D...

Not meant to hijack Koji's thread, just to add!

Got that lens today and brought it into action asap, examples using my standard subjects, all shot handheld using built in flash at f3.5 (fully open). Full size images scaled down, nothing else done to them. Hercules' eye was shot fully extended 1:2

LCA is very low, not as low as the Apo-Lanthar:

excellent sharp lens, but somewhat prone to flare, as may be seen from the 2nd shot outside:

flash shot inside:

sun outside:

100% Detail of the former shot:

Bokeh - creamy, creamy...

Is Hercules a male? I ask because it sounds strange, it has some light brown hints in the fur and usually 3-coloured cats are all female...

Funny, but yes he is (was) male. Quite a biggy at 13 kilos and extremely strong, but at the same time fears anything and anyone. Mother was a very little all white cat and the father a wild brown/black bobcat (!!). My wife brought him from the USA. He has three colors, white/brown/black.

Great, Klaus.

That ML macro lens has surprisingly little CA, which I did not check.

In Japan, cats with three colours (white, black, and brown) are called "mike".
They are quite common, so there must be lots of male too. Very Happy

"mike" literally means "three hair" in english, we do not care much about
plural things in grammar of our language. It tries to mean "three coloured
hair".

Oh, "mike" pronounces "me-keh" just like "bo-keh". We normally do not
use "h" in roman-writing somehow. May name pronounces "koh-ji"
actually, but writes "koji" even though "o" in "koji" is pronounced longer.

So I have to try calling him "Mike", maybe he follows more then... Very Happy

I just took out the Yashica Macro 2.8/60mm which I have since quite some time and will also give it a try. Do you have that too?

PostPosted: Fri Apr 03, 2009 3:17 pm    Post subject: Reply with quote

No, I do not have 2,8/60mm macro from Yashica.

This Yashinon macro 60/2.8 is a great achievement, so is descendant
Yashica AF macro 2.8/60, which is very rare unfortunately. This AF
macro 60/2.8 is better than Y/C macro 60mm every one says in japan(?)

I have Yashica ML 55/2.8 and 55/4 macros, which are not too inferior to
Y/C macro 2.8/60, though I do not have this Y/C 60mm macro lens.

Well the 2.8/60mm is a good lens but not as spectatcular as teh 3.5/100mm I would say. these are a few quick shots, but maybe that lens deserves better!

TCA fully open:

test shots, all fully open:

Stumbled across that famous Yashica ML100/3.5 macro lens today on camera show and grabbed it - now I have two, so if you want one, here comes your chance to have Zeiss Makro-Planar 100mm perfomance at a fraction of the price!!!
