Which lens do you like for the bokeh?

It depends which kind of bokeh I want to get.

For a creamy bokeh with a very narrow DoF: Nikkor-S.C 1.2/55.

For a very special bokeh with excellent sharpness in the sharp areas: Volna-9 2.8/50 Macro.

For what is generally considered a pleasant bokeh:
- Nikkor-H 1.8/85
- Volna-3 2.8/80
- Tair-11 2.8/133
- Leica Summicron-R 2.0/50
and several others...

There are many lenses with very good bokeh. Bokeh depends on how we decide to make photo. Not only but sometimes "macro" shot with average lens give us impression that this particular lens develops beautiful bokeh. Well, the most valuable are shots from distance.
Looking for any cine lenses make me jealous and probably next task it will be just to try something new.
Below are 4 pictures. The subject is always the same. Grace is somebody very special for me. So please don't complain Rolling Eyes
Every picture was converted from PEF to TIFF using Faststone, from TIFF to jpg with CS2 "save for web", resizing and compressing only. NO OTHER PP was done like contrast, sharpness, curves etc. All photos were done without any additional support like tripod, monopod.

Distagon 4/50

Sonnar 4/150

Tamron 2.5/180

Tamron 2.8/80-200

no-X: Regarding the shots from the Elgeet. It's a oscillo navitar. So it's an industrial lens for catching oscilloscope traces.
Therefore the huge amount of optical deficiencies.

Here's a shot of the lens.

A shot with it at infinity. Easy to see the optical flaws. These lenses were made with a curved field in mind.

And finally some lens p*rn with it.

This is a pic I took with my Pentacon 135mm f2.8 plus extension tube of a tiny fly today, I love the bokeh and a big thanks to Attila - this is a great lens even wide open.

And here is the lens Shocked

I would include the word "often". But you make an important point. The distance relationships between camera, subject and background, and lens FL, are often ignored. People are too busy counting aperture blades.

Wormhandler: Thanks! Really nice lens Smile

Schneider Kreuznach Radionar 105mm F4,5. Supersoft all over, but only at close focus. At more than 2m it gets really sharp even wide open.

Cosina Voigtländer Macro Apo Lanthar 125mm.
The focus is off a few mm, but I guess this thread is about the bokeh.

And here is some crazy bokeh for you. If anyone can guess what lens it is I am really impressed.

Thanks for reminding... I have this lens on my table from last 10months... didnt get a chance to make an adapter for XSi. Let me do tonight. I have his little bro, Schneider-Kreuznach Radionar 50mm f2.9 (2.9/5cm), superb lens.

so many lovely photos,
super lenses handled by specialists,
what a great thread.

S-M-C Tak 50/1.4

I don't know if this photo even qualifies as a sample for bokeh, I am quite new to photography, but I like the rendering of the background.

..or is it just memories of a few happy days of friendship with this freespirited girl, why I specially like this photo? Wink

so many photos in this thread highlight the bokeh rendering of a specific lens very well, this sample may not do that.
or does it?
I am curious and grateful for any opinion

best regards,
kuuan

Ballu: Please report how it handles on the canon after you have it finished. About the smaller brother 5cm 2,9 I have no clue of the performance. I have the brother in between, the 80mm 2,9 and, that lens have not got the same close focus behaviour as the 105 mm.

Kuuan: About bokeh. I believe it is the rendering of the background just as your sample shows. Many people mostly look for how the out of focus highlights render. Bright ring, neutral or gaussian. This may be a a good indication on how the lens renders OOF areas, but it is not the same as bokeh, in it's original meaning.

BTW, that SMC-Tak 50 1.4 is a lovely lens and creates wonderful bokeh.

Here is a shot from mine.

Here is one from Olympus zuiko 85mm F2 MC. Frosty greeting from Sweden.

My Radionar 50/2.9 is multi coated, rare and sharp... with excellent bokeh (as it is not that fast, but bokeh are nice).

Color contrast is fantastic. I think I'll start looking for a friend to the 180/4 APO Lanthar Razz

And the 180/4 APO Lanthar is on my wanted list. Very Happy

Ballu: That Helios 85mm bug picture is fantastic. Do you remember if it was taken wide open at 1.5?

I had to check your flickr page and among all your lovely lenses I fell for the Graphic Raptar Wollensak 161mm f/4.5.
Do you have a picture of that setup maybe?

I wondered when the CV125 would make it to this list .... looks like a wonderful lens, everyone who has it seems to love it.

Your "friend" may well cost you around 1200 dollars, seems to be current price.

I bought an APO 180/4 but it got lost in the post Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad

Zenitar 50/1.7 Question

PostPosted: Mon Dec 29, 2008 3:40 pm    Post subject: Reply with quote

The Pentacon 135 preset is impressive (as it is supposed to be). The transition between focused and unfocused areas is a bit difficult, though. I just posted samples (including an 100% crop from a 5D of the transition) on Flickr http://www.flickr.com/photos/paulcowan/sets/72157611818330702/

Incidentally, I feel that there is a considerable feeling of "depth" in the skyscraper photo which I haven't noticed on newer lenses. I don't know if that is a feature of this lens or an accident of the light, I need to do some more tests.

Pentacon 135mm pre-set did provide me best bokeh what I ever seen, superb lens to me.
