Which are your "regular" lenses?

Attila and I recently had a short discussion about how probable it will be that use my Fujinon 43-75.

Then I hit upon an idea: Which are your "regular" lenses? Which lenses do almost always take with you when you go for a photo walk?

My "regular" lenses are: (EDITED!)
- Tokina AT-X Pro 4/12-24 DX Asph.
- Sigma DC 2.8-4.5/17-70 SLD Macro
- Nikkor-N.C 2.8/24
- Nikkor-O 2.0/35
- SMC Pentax-M 1.7/50
- Nikkor-S.C 1.2/55
- Nikkor-H 1.8/85
- Nikkor-Q.C 3.5/135

These lenses I use often :
- Zenitar 2.8/16 Fisheye
- Tamron 2.5/24
- Canon EF 1.8/50 II
- Jupiter-9 2-0/85
- Jupiter 37-A 3.5/135
- Jupiter-11 4/135
- Carl Zeiss Jena Sonnar 4/135 1Q

And these lenses I use quite frequently, they are sometimes in my bag:
- Peleng 3.5/8 Fisheye
- Vivitar 2.5/28 and 2.8/28
- Kiron 2.0/28
- MIR-1B 2.8/37
- Auto Revuenon 1.4/55 (has been kind of replaced by the Nikkor-S.C 1.2/55)
- Auto Rikenon 1.7/50 (The Pentax-M 1.7/50 still is a little better.)
- Yashica ML 1.7/50 (The Pentax-M 1.7/50 still is a little better.)
- Mamiya Auto Sekor 1.8/55 (The Pentax-M 1.7/50 still is a little better.)
- Nikkor-H 2.0/50 (Very nice lens but "only" f2.0 Wink)
- Helios-44-2 2/58 (Very nice lens but "only" f2.0 Wink)
- Helios-44M-6 2/58 MC (Very nice lens but "only" f2.0 Wink)
- Pentacon auto 2.8/135
- Weltblick 3.5/135
- Telear-N 3.5/200 (Great lens, but at a crop cam I don't need 200mm often.)
- Jupiter-21 M 4/200 (Great lens, but at a crop cam I don't need 200mm often.)
- Sigma Zoom-0 II 3.5-4.5/28-85 MC
- Soligor C/D Zoom+Macro 3.8-5.3/35-200 MC
- Tamron SP 3.8-5.4/60-300 MC 23A
- Tamron SP 3.5/70-210 CF Macro MC 19AH
- Soligor MC 3.5/70-220 Macro
- Canon EF 4-5.6/75-300 USM II

These lenses (plus the Rikenon 35-70 which was my very first lens) I would never sell!

The rest of my lenses, I hardly use, although some of them are really good. Well...

What about you?

It depends on the "job".

For shooting AUtumn, as I did a few days ago, I take the MIRs, the Helios-44, Russians in general.

For shooting action or low light I take my fastest lenses, which are the Contax lenses.

As everyday setup I don't have a fixed set of lenses, I turn them around depending on how I feel that day. But there are some lenses that end up more often in the bag, these are the Flek 4/20, Distagon 1.4/35, Elmarit 2.8/35, MIR-24M or N, Summicron 2/90, Elmarit 2.8/135, Jupiter-37AM, Jupiter-21M, CZJ Sonnar 2.8/180 or 2.8/200.

Lucis

How can you carry a bag with all that glass in it? Smile

I usually make a decision on what event I am going out for -

My 35-70/2.8 nikkor is usually along as are:
Voigtlander 90/3.5
Vivitar 100/2.5
nikkor 105/1.8
nikkor 20/2.8
sigma 15-30/3.5
nikkor 28/2

I usually have only one lens with me plus perhaps the 2.9/50 Radionar. My first line lenses are:

VPK Meniscus Achromat
2.9/50 Radionar
4.5/105 Radionar
4.5/142 Cooke Anastigmat
8/175(?) Rapid Rectilinear (~1915, still untested but promising)
4/180 APO-Lanthar (+ Komura 2x TC)

The reserve:

2.8/16 Zenitar
2/35 Summicron-R
2.8/60 Macro-Elmarit-R
2.5/105 Nikkor AI
4/180 Elmar-R

The rest gets just very occasional use.

Veijo

PS. I just got a long (8/175 mm ?) Rapid Rectilinear, which is very clean and seems also to be quite sharp. I hope I can test it during the week-end.

Shocked Wow! This looks like an almost perfect set to me! Very Happy
Perhaps a 24mm lens is kind of missing... Oh wait, you're shooting full frame, ok, forget about the 24mm. Wink

That's only 8 lenses (sometimes 10 - I just take some of the others not all of them). Wink

That sounds great! (I just think I would only take one or two of the 90-105mm range.)

Veijo, this is without doubt the most interesting (and may I say "extravagant") list of all!

And any of your "reserve" lenses would be a starter in my team (except for the Zenitar which I sometimes leave at home)!

Looking forward to seeing the shots with your new toy! Gorgeous lens.

Wow! I admire that. Although, I often end up with using only 2 or 3 of the lenses I brought, I need the feeling that I could use others. Two lenses would not be enough for me...

...unless I take my rangefinders for a walk, then 2 or even 1 (fixed) lens is enough. Wink

If I'm shooting manual focus my usual camera bag is:

Zenitar 2.8/16
Soligor 2.8/20
Cosinon 2.0/28
Porst 1.2/55
Jupiter J9
Takumar 2.8/100
Takumar 2.5/135

If I'm shooting sports I can add the Panagor 5.6/300 and possibly a 400 or 500mm supertele. I also have a Takumar 2.0/35 if I need something in between. But all those are not in my usual camera bag.

Carsten

You are quite correct about the crossover at 90-100, but the Viv is a macro, and the other two have very different characters, both of which I love. What I finish up doing is to use only two of the lenses, one of which will tend to be in the 90-100 range. Smile

Driven by indecision of course.

patrickh

Anyway I cant take all of them - I would need a truck. Very Happy Very Happy

Veijo

That is an eclectic set if ever I saw one. And I agree with Carsten's comment about the reserve list - Some of those I would dearly love to be able to use.

Patrick, I can totally understand you. I also sometimes take two or three 50ish lenses or two 135mm lenses on a tour, because of their different personalities.

And I hardly can decide which 28mm lens I choose (Kiron 2/28, Viv 2.5/28 or Viv 2.8/2Cool, so occasionally I take all three of them.
The Viv 2.8/28 is the smallest one, the Kiron the fastest one and the Viv 2.5/28 the biggest one but the one in the best condition. And I have to choose... Surprised

Tell you what, I once did that! I packed all my lenses into four bags (!), put them into my van and went on a one-day photo tour with my dad (who also brought a bag full of lenses). It was complete nonsense to do that, but it was great fun to have all my lenses with me! Laughing

It meters accurately with pre-A lenses and because it has TTL as well as P-TTL then flash works well with pre-A lenses (or pre P-TTL flashguns).

I second the observation about the istDs and older lenses. The probs with old lenses and the K10D are one of the reasons why the K10D is not an option for me.

My new set

RMC Tokina 2.8/28 OM Mount
Zuiko Olympus 1.8/50 OM Mount
Zuiko Olympus 3.5/135 OM Mount

Wow, what a collections! Mine is much shorter...

I don't like to carry a lot of lenses, so I usually come out with just a single lens, very often the CZ Planar 1.7 50mm.
But since I got the Industar, I use to bring it along the CZ Sonnar 135mm.
I'm still waiting for the M39 adapter for the Jupiter-9, so probably in the future I'll go out with the Jupiter and the Industar.

Best regards.
Jes.

I am a pretty new member on here (well, I'm new, but not sure about pretty). As such, I posted a bit about my resurrection of the old M42 system from yesteryear: http://forum.mflenses.com/viewtopic.php?t=3130&start=15

I just feel that, in my lifetime, I want to get back to the roots of my photographic impetus from when I was a teenager. So, it's time to cast off the auto-this and auto-that and digital-those, and go for the seat-of-the-pants all manual regime that is always such a blast!

Since I am building the M42 system again, I am going to give you my ANTICIPATED usage of what I have so far.

I do a LOT of off-trail hiking in the high country of the Olympic Mountains, so that calls for paring things down to what I feel is essential. In my case, it is a couple of zoom lenses to cover the majority of focal lengths, rather than a whole cadre of primes.

It will be interesting to me to see how this all pans out, and to see if the "real world" usage is what I anticipated in the first place. Confused

ANTICIPATED HIKING AND OFF-TRAIL GROUP:

Revuenon 3003 camera (mirror lockup and I can pound tent stakes with it)
Appropriate tripod, as lightweight as I can get away with
Cable Release
Split ND filters
Polarizing filter
Yellow filter
HP5 and Velvia

Tamron SP 35-80 (should receive early next week)
Tamron SP 70-210

ANTICIPATED LANDSCAPE GROUP:
Revuenon 3003
Tripod
Cable Release
General Electric 58 Lightmeter
Various filters
HP5, Provia, K25 (getting low on final supply), K64, Portra 400VC, Velvia

Zeiss Flektogon 4/25 (Should receive any day now from Germany - I used to have one "back in the day", and I can't resist its capabilities)
Mamiya Sekor 1.4/55 (Man, what a GREAT lens this sleeper is!)
Jupiter9 2/85
Super Takumar 3.5/135 (Old style pre-set)
Tamron SP 35-80 (ordered)
Tamron SP 70-210
Tamron SP 300
Tamron 2x converter (ordered)
Pentax Screw 2x converter

PORTRAITURE/STREET/FAMILY

Various filters
Sometimes a tripod

Mamiya Sekor 1.4/55
Jupiter9 2/85
Super Tak 3.5/135

Is it appropriate to sometime post images of my set?

Hello Laurence. I have a great affinity with you about getting back to roots, I think we are of similar age (I'm 61 at Christmas). For the past 2 years I've been collecting M42 cameras and lenses too. My original 35mm cameras back in the 60s were a Zenit 3M with the little Industar 3.5/50 lens and a Praktica Nova 1B with Meyer Domiplan 2.8/50. In those days I used to long for a Spotmatic but could never afford one, so in the past two years I've bought two! (SP and SPII). My list of M42 lenses is now quite long and I'm beginning to feel I don't need many more.

To get on topic, I generally take only one prime lens of each length I might need. I still haven't decided on any favourites so I generally rotate them. On my recent trip to Paris and Amsterdam I took a small set of CZJ primes to use with the Canon 400D and the Spottie, but other times I might take Takumar or Russian lenses, depending how I feel or what I'm going to shoot (usually architecture and landscapes). I also have three Tamron AD-2 zooms with M42 mounts and Pentax K mounts so that I can also use them on my ME Super and K2 cameras. I really missed the SP 35-80 in Paris, so I think I will always include this in future.

Thanks, guys!

It is really interesting to read your stories.

Laurence, I believe you without seeing about the Mamiya. I've got a Mamiya 1.8/55 and this is also a very nice lens!
