I am amazed at the possibilities of the medium format when a good film like the Velvia 50 is used.
This downsized sample really is not fair to what is the quality of the output:
http://img100.imageshack.us/img100/333/velviareszdyl7.jpg
But can give at least an idea of the richness of tones, the quality of detail, and the great dynamic range, which is impressive for being a positive film.
I have not used a polarizer or a gradation filter, this is simply the Biometar 80mm with nothing attached.
With Pentacon 6 cameras available nowadays for as little as 50 Euros (that is what I paid my second copy), and with lenses like Volna-3 2.8/80 available for as little as 20-30 Euros, I think that any manual photography lover should not be without one. With 70-80 Euros you can start using a system that maybe is not the state of professional MF art (let's take away the maybe), but can give just the same amazing results, great lots of fun, and negatives you can print wall posters from. _________________ Orio, Administrator

It could have been even better if I had a UV filter on.
I didn't, and it clearly shows with the haze. _________________ Orio, Administrator

Well the subject of the last two is more interesting, the first one is little more than a test
The MIR lens is not of the same quality as the Zeiss.
So the details in the last two pictures are not as good.
The previous photo was taken with a Zeiss Biometar, which is a very sharp lens stopped down.
If you look at the details in the soil in the first picture you can imagine (in spite of resize) the kind of detail at 100%
I also have the Flektogon but it's 50mm instead of the 45mm of the MIR
The difference is small but significant, 28mm equivalent for the MIR against the 31mm equivalent of the Flektogon.
Also my Flek is not multicoated. It's the Zebra version. _________________ Orio, Administrator

This castle is small but it's a fantastic place for photographs.
When I will find nice models, I will make series of "ambiented portraits" here.
BTW how do you name those portraits that are not in studio, but are located in an environment, and the subject interacts with it?
I tried "ambiented portraits" which is literal translation from Italian, but I am almost sure it's not good for English. _________________ Orio, Administrator

It was a very saturated day, in spite of some haze in the distance.

I did most photos I took in Barcelona in 1987 that way.
I had a Zeiss Super Ikonta, one of those folding cameras.
gorgeous model
Tessar lens.
The meter was not working well, so I did meter by guesstimate.
But it's super easy in Barcelona, they always have the same weather! _________________ Orio, Administrator

Solinar?
No no.... pure Carl Zeiss lens. REAL Pre-war model (not like when we say "this is pre-war" and it's really of the 50s )
Carl Zeiss was not yet (obviously) separated then in West and East. _________________ Orio, Administrator

The rule of 16:
Full sun gives F16 if the shutter is same/close to ISO. The rest is estimated from there;
example Iso 50 full sun is F16 at 1/50 sec or F8 at 1/100 etc.
Specially in large format this is not that critical.

One day, I am sure, I will try to get a nice Pentacon 6 set. _________________ Personal forum activity on pause every now and again (due to job obligations)!

A client showed me his photographic gear a few weeks ago and I was really taken with his Contax MF SLR camera. Not that I can afford one like that right now, but it got me thinking about MF.
I've seen single lens and double lens cameras worth buying, but I don't know which is best to go with to start with. Do they both give the same picture size? What are the pros and cons of each? |
