yes, it's always these alpine meadows just up the treeline and just down the rocks.
one can be sure to find marmots in in Salzburg in this circumstances.
And the most easy sign to find them is the hard whistle which sounds for
several kilometers.

Tobias, it is the same for our local endemic species of Olympic Marmots (Marmota olympus); they are
also found only in the interfaces between treeline and the start of rocks.
From Science Now: The species occurs only in the U.S. state of Washington, on the middle subalpine elevations of the
Olympic Peninsula. In 2009, it was declared the state's official endemic mammal.
The Olympic Marmot has only 40 chromosomes, whereas all other worldwide marmots have 42. 
As I'm sure you are well aware - anywhere there are marmots, you can bet there is great scenery.
Here's a typical 'marmot meadow' near here. Everytime you move, they let out a whistle that knocks you
off your feet!

I am not into marmots so this is very new for me, never heard of the Olympic marmot.

I am a percussionist, so my ears are quite used to some noise
... but I got once a marmot whistle from about 30m distance,
the reaction was that I had a beep in my ear for half a day

My grandfather, whom I grew up with, was my hiking mentor. He was able to make the whistling sound perfectly! I was always
amazed at how many marmots would pop up out of burrows.
