To frame or not to frame....

I'm of the opinion that sometimes a good frame works a certain
synergism in a picture. I really wasn't completely happy with this
picture until I did this:

I know this is atypical subject matter, but doing this seemed to "turn
the light on" in the picture. Luv to hear comments...

Bill

ps I'm embarrassed to say that I recently found out how to do these
border frames. Embarassed

I like thinner frame , this is too thick to me.

How about this:

Closer, try to make more less border or a one thin line beetween the picture and border with other color (white example).

Attila, this is all pretty new to me, but will work some more on it
tomorrow. Thanks for your suggestions!

Your very welcome! Let we see the result!

I think a wide border can sometimes look really good. The black sections in your picture merging into the black border is really quite effective. Generally black borders aren't my cup of tea - they remind me of black-edged funeral cards! Smile

I deliberately made a wide (white) border on this picture to emulate the wide border insert card in picture frames. It would probably look better if it was wider.

I actually like the large border in Bill's image. Although usually I favour thinner sizes.

I think large borders for digital images play more the role of passe-partout than that of frames: they create an environmental perceptual space more than simply cutting the image out of the context. They become part of the image itself.

Nothing of course beats a real print in a real frame on a wall.

Orio,
Environmental perceptual space, is exactly what I was striving for, as
having no frame at all seemed to be "bleeding" the light out of the
photograph where having the thick border contained the light, if that
makes sense. This is for internet, web, display where physical renderings,
actual prints mounted for a wall, may take on different needs. I'll be
experimenting with different styles and thickness of frames after work
today.

Peter, I think the border looks great in your picture!

Attila, will try the thin, different colored border you suggested, thanks!

Bill, your first frame is a really dark green, right?
(I just ask because Peter mentioned a black frame.)

Sometimes I like a wide frame but I always would recommend to put a 1pt black line (or very dark grey) around the actual image and then the frame. That provides a better separation and in my eyes makes the whole picture complete. Try it...

Also Peters shot could win with such a line, I think.

Carsten, yes, both my frames are a very dark green, will try your
suggestion, thanks!

Well, I tried Carsten's idea tonight:

If I ever printed this pic, I'd want a frame very similar to this, but that's
just me.

Opinions? Good, not good, sux? Laughing

I would rather keep the green as passe partout like in original image, and add a small black frame outside of the green.

That will be my next try, thanks, Orio.

It's kind of funny, but I like the first one the best, too. Simon and Peter,
both of you are architects, did you ever take the Myers-Briggs Personality
Test? I did ages ago in the navy, and found out I was an INTP, Architect.
No where near an architect in real life, but I did design and build 2
rustic homes and helped design and build a 3rd, and architecture has
always been an interest of mine.

Just musing at this coincidence...

No, sorry, you got me wrong. What I meant is a line just 1pt wide, you know just a very thin black line which has no function but to separate the image from the frame.

Like this:

Or with a tiny drop shadow:

Or with a little "glow":

Sorry for hijacking your pic, just wanted to show what I meant...

I didn't like the 1px wide line. How about this Carsten?

Peter, nice effect! It's like looking out a window upon this scene! Cool
