I just bought Tamron Sp 500mm F8 but I also had a chance to get Rubinar 500mm F8 which I left with a seller.
I know from the forum (thank all of you) that Tamron Sp is regarded as one of the best in this class.
From the other side Rubinar is said to be one of the best Russian mirrors and they are also very good.
How would you compare them both?
Should I leave Rubinar in peace? |

Tamron SP is very well built small lens, Rubinar I don't think so best Russian and , built quality is quiet crappy. Leave it ...
If you still need good mirror look 500mm f6.3 giant from MTO _________________ -------------------------------

Master I was expecting you to be the first answering my first question May the force be with you!
Would you suggest that MTO is comparable or better than Tamron? Sharper perhaps? |

Faster for sure , F8 is pretty slow to capture , birds , animals.
I sold Tamron and kept MTO , but MTO is huge , it has large diameter and flash house can be a problem on most cameras. _________________ -------------------------------

In my experience, the Rubinar is as sharp or slightly sharper than the Tamron, and much sharper than Tokina Reflex 500/8. Russian mirrors are generally excellent. Build quality is more than OK; the barrel is made of aluminum alloy (it's light), and it's very easy to service or adjust the lens should you need to. Why would you want to? Because it may not mount some cameras if their built-in flash protrudes forward too much No such problem with the Tamron, or so I heard. _________________ List of lenses |

Pii what camera body are you using? You need the FLASH to protrude less then 15mm to get adequate clearance for the MTO 500 f6.3. |

Thanks aoleg,
do you like Rubinar more than MTO? Which version would you recommend? F8 or F6.3?
I use Canon 550d and think of 5d II next year maybe.
No problems with Tamron, seems to be sharp enough. Just to feed my curiosity I'd like to compare it somehow. |

I think the trouble with any Russian lenses is their manufacturing QA. Hence you get such variation in performance compared with Japanese lenses in general. |

Just measure the flash unit, to find how much it protrudes from the body, mounting face. I can't comment on any of those cameras. My Pentax K5 is fine but not my K20D. |

Looks like my 550d will handle that lens. To answer my all questions I will probably get one MTO F6.3 on christmas, compare them and post some conclusions. |

Just to add to the confusion, I have a 3M-5A which is very Sharp and contrasty, better than the Tokina but not quite as good as the Tamron SP 55BB. The 3M is a bit heavy for me. _________________ Graham - Moderator

3M, MTO and Rubinar are all different designs. I have a 300mm f/5.6 3M lens, and it's excellent.
I never tried 500/6.3 mirrors unfortunately. _________________ List of lenses |

Really amazing lens! Well done Olivier!!!
I like the Hummingbird, Rusałka pokrzywnik, sad Monkey and grey Owl samples most. So sharp, contrasty and saturated and great subjects also!
My Tamron is 55BB. Are there any image differences comparing to 55B?
Will I be able to post some of my samples here as a new member? |

Welcome Pii !
I don't know wether there are image differences or not between 55B and 55BB. The 55BB has a revised optical design.
Here is a link to the great site supported by Attila, adaptall-2.org : http://www.adaptall-2.org/index.html
and here the 55B : http://www.adaptall-2.org/lenses/55B.html
and the 55BB : http://www.adaptall-2.org/lenses/55BB.html
You can see that the authors wondered wether there were differences and which was sharper than the other in different situations.
It would be interesting to try and answer these questions. Any idea and procedure to reach such a goal ?
Sure, post some of your samples. No problems, and if any, some of our magicians around here will make them appear. _________________ Olivier - Moderator
