I tried my Tamron SP 500 F8 on the 5D², handheld on our cat.
A catadioptric lens to photograph a cat. It made me smile.
When I saw the results, I kept on smiling.
Not easy to stay stable...

Excellent - there was a Japanese guy, too lazy to look him up now, who used mirror lenses to shoot cranes (birds) - even using a 35mm purpose mirror lens on a medium format camera. Impressive results.

yours are also, one of the unfair things in life is the fact that I simply do not get along with telephoto. Crying or Very sad

Here's my overused word: STUNNING!

But, that's an appropriate description. You made the Cat Lens SING on
these. Just plain WOW.

That 3rd image blows me away. Startling in its excellence. You MUST
make some enlargements on these. Shocked

Olivier do you have the Tamron SP 2x Tele converter for this lens? Is it the model 01F or version 200F .

YES !!! Very Happy
I have it. It's the 01F.
But I didn't post any picture taken with it.

The 2x enlarger 01F has a system showing the aperture on it.
When you mount it on a 2.8 lens, it shows 5.6 on the 01F.
That's normal, isn't it ?
So, I was quite astonished that the f8 aperture of the SP 500 was maintained...

Here are some pictures of birds taken yesterday with the SP 500 F8 + 2x Extender 01F mounted on the 5D MkII.
Shooting conditions : medium light, so I increased the Isos ; I sat in a chair my arms on a desk in front of the window. So, no tripod but I was quite steady even if handheld.

Oups. I didn't converted them to JPeg so I'll come back...
Pictures are coming Laughing

Just 2 samples. I'll make a different topic for the others.
No crop, no special post processing.

1- Without the doubler :

2- With the doubler : 1000mm !

Impressive, really. Now I getting taste for such long donut mirror. Hope that bokeh is not crazy in contrasty and not standard circumstances. Then what about price for such small long glass?

PostPosted: Sat Feb 19, 2011 9:30 pm    Post subject: Reply with quote

Well, bokeh can be crazy with dounut effects.
But you see it clearly in the rangefinder and so, you can avoid it by changing position.

Here is one a little above what I paid but it seems in very good condition Click here to see on Ebay
This one either :Click here to see on Ebay

Some samples of crazy bokeh. I have to stress that I really had very few.
Today I had none when shooting the birds.

Topic with the birds, 500mm alone, then 1000mm with the doubler.

Thanks Olivier,
I have the chance to buy a 01F converter so I will see if it is still up for sale. The 200F is the dedicated converter for the SP500 and a few other SP lenses so if you see it grab it (possibly rare).
I like how you can see the doughnuts in the viewfinder and have the chance to avoid them also....I love that little bird photo.

In the owner's manual they say the converter for it is the 01F. Wink

Tobias, thank you. It's light weight with 575 gr. Smile
