Starter Set...

While answering another thread, I had an idea...
Which lenses would you put into a "starter set", a set of lenses that provides a good start for a M42-newbie with, let's say, a crop-DSLR?

The lenses have to perform at least "well", must be pretty cheap and rather easy to get.

This is my starter set recommendation:

- Vivitar Auto Wide-Angle 2.8/28
- Soligor Wide-Auto 2.8/35 or MIR-1B (if available for a good price)
- Pentacon 1.8/50
- Meyer Optik Trioplan 2.8/100 V (if available for a good price)
- Jupiter 37 or Pentacon auto 2.8/135 (depending on which one you can get for a nice price)
- or a Revuenon-Spezial 2.8/135 instead (if you want to save some money)
- Pentacon 4/200 or a Super Varexon 3.5/200 (if you find one, you can get it cheaply)

This will cost about € 100-120,- and make up a good starter list, I guess.

What would you recommend to a friend who does not want to pay too much and still try to shoot with different focal lengths?

Carsten

BTW, I just have packed a bag for my dad who used to shoot on film, now shoots with an Olympus compact digital camera and becomes more and more interested in my lens collection.

I will make him a little present. His starter set looks like that:

- Zenit E
- Raynox Auto 2.8/28
- Soligor Wide-Auto 2.8/35
- Pentacon auto 1.8/50 (replaced the Auto Reflecta 1.7/55)
- Carl Zeiss Jena Sonnar 4/135 1Q
- Pentacon 4/200 (replaced the Super Varexon 3.5/200)
- Maginon G HQC 4-5.6/70-210

I guess this will amuse him for a while. Wink

to me, These 2 lenses should be part of all starter kit,

1) Super Takumar 50mm f1.4 (little expensive, but you can get cheap with camera)
2) Super Takumar 135mm f3.5 (this one goes as cheap as $20, sometimes Twisted Evil )

Other lenses which you can get for good prices,

Mamiya 55mm f1.4 (can be found with different names) (another must have)
Super Takumar 35mm f3.5

The cheapest set will be,
Super Takumar 135mm f3.5 & Mamiya 55mm f1.4

- CZJ Flektogon 4/20
- Pentacon 2.8/29
- MC MIR-24M 2/35
- Helios-44-2 or Pentacon 1.8/50
- Industar-61L/3 MC 2.8/50 Macro
- Jupiter-9 2/85
- Jupiter-37 (any variant) 3.5/135
- Jupiter-21M 4/200

These are all budget lenses with one exception the Flek 4/20, sorry but for a crop camera I consider a 20mm lens an indispensable buy as it equals to 32mm on 1.6c crop and 40mm on 2x crop. So the money must be spent.

All the other lenses are very cheap, here's what I paid for mine:

- Pentacon 2.8/29 I think 12 Euros or something like that

- MC MIR-24M 2/35 something around 35-40 Euros (I have the N version)

- Helios-44-2 I think it was 5 or 7 Euros

- Pentacon 1.8/50 (alternative to Helios) I got it free with a Praktica camera

- Industar-61L/3 MC 2.8/50 Macro got it with a bundle, hard to say how much I paid but judging on the value of the Pentax bellows I'd say I got it for free or almost

- Jupiter-9 paid 25 Euros

- Jupiter-37 I paid 7 Euros for the first copy

- Jupiter-21 I paid 19 Euros for the first copy

Flektogon 35mm f2.4
Super takumar 50mm f1.4
Pentacon 50 1.8
maybe a Jupiter 9 2/85 long
pentacon/meyer 135mm f2.8
Tair 300mm

Should cover you for most things I'd say you'd need to spend a bout ?250 for that lot, maybe half if you lose the Flek.... or if you are patient and hunt!

My "personal" starter set (with lenses I know and own) looks like that:

- Peleng 3.5/8
- Zenitar 2.8/16
- Nikkor-N.C 2.8/24
- Kiron 2.0/28
- MIR-1B 2.8/37 or Takumar 3.5/35 or Nikkor-O 2.0/35
- Revuenon (Tomioka) 1.4/55 or Pentax SMC 1.7/50
- Jupiter-9 2.0/85
- Nikkor-Q.C. 3.5/135 or Jupiter-37A 3.5/135
- Telear-N 3.5/200
- Tair 4.5/300
- Sigma Theta Zoom 28-85
- Soligor 70-220 or Tamron SP 60-300

These are the lenses I would not sell at the moment...

But this set would be too expensive (€ 700,- at least) for the first steps, I think.

That's why I decided to put cheaper lenses in my starter set recommendation and accept a little lower (but not bad) performance.

I would give one advise!

A good 50mm between 1.4 and 1.8.

Its fast, good quality, cheap, versatile...

If you use it with a reverse adapter you have an exellent macro lens.

My starter set:

very wide: MC Zenitar 2.8/16mm
(wide: Mir-10A 3.5/28mm - perhaps too expensive for a starter set)
normal: MC Helios 77M-4 1.8/52mm
portrait: MC Jupiter 9 2/85mm
short tele: MC Jupiter 37AM 3.5/135mm
tele: MC Jupiter 21M 4/200mm

Great post for a guy like me just starting into manual focus and not having the slightest idea were to start, totally different ball game with mf so many to pick & choose from not like af were there’s just a handful.

Needing a wide angle mostly for starters doing landscape, with a 28 then add in the crop giving me roughly a 42 it would be nice to go 20 or even lower depending on distortion and mainly price so I will probably wind up with the 28, with the vivitar compared to raynox, flectogon, pentagon, zenitar & kiron, vivitar will probably be the lowest in price I think, does it matter on serial mod # which one to get in the vivitar.

Then I’ll just build from there with the help of your lists till I run out of camera money Razz

Vivitar 19mm f3.8 not too expensive and good starter lens on crop camera.Mir-20M 20mm f3.5 has also acceptable price and it's quality also acceptable or good.

Yes, it does!
You should try to get Vivtars manufactured by Kiron or Komine.

This is the typical "career" of a member here. Wink

1. Careful attempts
2. First signs of addiction
3. Gathering of numerous lenses
4. Realising complete addiction

Then you have two choices:

Self-control and thinning out your collection OR total bust!

I'm somewhere between 3 & 4 at the moment. Definitely beyond the addiction stage Smile

I'm not buying so many lenses now but I still need an ultra-wide for the crop camera. I haven't decided which yet - maybe a Flek 4/20 or a Mir-20. For the time being I'm using the 18-55 AF kit lens. All my MF lenses for the Canon 400D are M42 mount.

I'm also looking at possibly buying some more K-mount lenses to use on the ME-Super. Currently I have only the Pentax-M 1.7/50 and some Tamron Adaptall zooms.

My widest MF lens at the moment is a Komine-made Vivitar 2.8/28 which I bought back in the early 80's. This would be a great lens to include in a starter set.

Other lenses I'd recommend for a beginner (based on cost/value):

Mir-1B 2.8/37
Mir-24M 2/35 is a super faster lens, almost macro, but quite rare
Carl Zeiss Jena 2.4/35 but getting expensive
Carl Zeiss Jena Pancolar 1.8/50
Super Takumar 1.4/50 is very good but often yellowed
Pentacon 1.8/50 (cheap but poor wide open)
Jupiter 9 2/85
Carl Zeiss Jena S MC 3.5/135
Jupiter MC 37A or 37AM 3.5/135
Meyer Orestor or early Pentacon pre-set 4/200

I mustn't forget a Helios 44-2 or 44M-4 2/58, very cheap, poor wide open but excellent by f5.6

All above sets are perfect I also recommend those.
My suggestion is Tamron Adaptall-2 lenses only.

Vivitar 19mm f3.8
Tamron 28mm f2.5
Tamron SP 35-80mm f2.8
Tamron SP 70-210mm any variant
Tamron SP 300mm f5.6

Cost is little and you get very sharp lenses, with nice color rendering and cover almost all range.

Attila, he will need at least one fast lens in the 35-60mm range.

ok take a Pancolar 50mm f1.8 if 2.8 not enough.

I run Firefox and the only way I got them to open was by right-clicking them and opening the link in IE.
