Hi guys!
Today it's been a very hard day and I feel kinda sad for my Planar... The UV filter got stuck into the lens and trying to unscrew the filter, I unscrewed the lens from the focusing and diaphragm ring... Now I don't know what to do... tried to unscrewedagain but its impossible to screw again: I can screw the focusing ring to the diaphragm ring or the whole lens glass itself, but then I cannot screw the remaining ring/element. What should I do?
I tried to remove the name ring so I could unscrew all the elements but I didn't succed....
P.S: The UV filter was finally removed.... but the lens remains unscrewed...
Here some pictures, hope you can help me. Thanks!
If anyone is interested I can sell it as faulty... _________________ 5D & Fujica ST801|| Carl Zeiss Planar MM 50/1.7 (departed for resurrection) || Carl Zeiss Distagon 28/2.8 AEJ || Meyer Orestor "Pentacon" (relabeled) 135/2.8 || Carl Zeiss Jena 135/3.5 || Carl Zeiss Sonnar MM 85/2.8 || Carl Zeiss Flektogon MC "White" 35/2.4 || Olympus Zuiko OM MC 21/3.5 || Super Takumar 55/1.8 || Rollei Planar HFT 50/1.8 || "The three tenors" from Orio (Nikkor pre-AI 85/1.8, 135/3.5 & 105/2.5) |

Oh, that's a bummer.
Persevere; it came apart, it must go back.
I had a google, but didn't find any strip and reassemble instructions for the Planar 1.7, although Psychobiker (I assume the same, of this forum) took one apart for aperture cleaning. http://www.flickr.com/photos/psychobiker/sets/72157611844942002/ _________________ Dave - Moderator

I been trying during two hours and so and I don't find how to screw again the three parts together. I already saw the pictures supplied by Psychobiker and I thought that maybe disassembling the lens in an "appropriate" way should give me a hint about how to reassembling all back together: I couldn't even remove the ring name... It's a pity because the glass is in superb condition and this lens gave me my most sharpest images ever, even if I have only used during one month ...
I'll keep my position about trading with it or selling, if anyone is interested... I don't wanna loose time trying to repair something that I can't (with my poor skills) and this glass must give all its potential .
I'll try to unscrew the name ring again, let's see if I succeed.
P.S: More photos can be supplied to the interested, of course. _________________ 5D & Fujica ST801|| Carl Zeiss Planar MM 50/1.7 (departed for resurrection) || Carl Zeiss Distagon 28/2.8 AEJ || Meyer Orestor "Pentacon" (relabeled) 135/2.8 || Carl Zeiss Jena 135/3.5 || Carl Zeiss Sonnar MM 85/2.8 || Carl Zeiss Flektogon MC "White" 35/2.4 || Olympus Zuiko OM MC 21/3.5 || Super Takumar 55/1.8 || Rollei Planar HFT 50/1.8 || "The three tenors" from Orio (Nikkor pre-AI 85/1.8, 135/3.5 & 105/2.5) |

This may be a deeply stupid suggestion (if so please forgive me) but have you checked that all the threads are standard, i.e. tighten by turning clockwise? I have many lenses (and a Planar 1.7 but never taken it apart) and on on at least three or four one of the screws is a counter-clockwise tighten affair.
Just wondered, please ignore if I am way off track...

I think I don't get what you say, sorry, but as long as I get to understand, I DIDN'T REMOVE ANY SCREW, I just removed the three elements of the pictures, that they were screwed between themselves.
My intention then is to remove the screws so I can assemble the lens from zero, but as more as it gets I think I'm leaving it for impossible, so if someone wants to try...

To clarify:
I did NOT mean that you had removed screws! I meant that each section of the lens screws together with the others and that on some of my lenses, one or more parts needs to be screwed into the other anti-clockwise (that is to say rotating the parts from right to left) rather than, as is usually the case, clockwise (rotating the part from left to right)?
Sorry if my text was confusing!
Doug.
These pages have links with some info about either the 1.7 or the 1.4 - the MM lenses are quite different from the AE ones by the way!

After trying to get together the elements, I decline. I cannot put that much time into the lens as I would like so maybe I'll buy it new again or wait a bit.
As I managed to understand, I think that with unscrewing the name ring (I found it totally impossible), it will be possible to dissassemble everything and reassemble again, however, my skills are not enough.
For this reason, if anyone feels interested in this lens I would trade it for another 50mm (I just one to secure this focal length with something) or sell it, even if I don't know which would be a fair amount of money to ask for. Preferably, I prefer trading .
Here's how the last try ended (glass are pristine, aperture worked flawlessly (I guess that when assembled again will continue to do so)). The lens is a Planar 50/1.7 MM (and I include bot front and rear caps, which ones the lens came).

Wow! It looks very interesting Doug! I've just asked if the buyter wants to ship to Spain . Let's see what happens...
However I'm already watching close some Planar auctions. As far as I know they go for 60 to 100 euros.
