Well, it was cheap. Just as well because it'll be getting used as a doorstopper in future.

Huge amount of flare, low contrast and CA. I'm not surprised nobody had ever heard of Marep - if they made lenses like this they probably went out of business pretty quickly.

Here's the ghastly proof...

Pretty crap, huh?

That was without a lens hood, so I tried it again today and the exactly the same thing happened as soon as a bit of sky or bright area was included in the field of view. Looking inside the lens, it's obvious that not enough attention was paid to light baffling - there's a semi-reflective area of the barrel which just scatters light everywhere. This, combined with the uncoated glass, is just a recipe for disaster.

Good to read something about bad lenses. Thanks a lot.
I think we should follow this example and publish some shots of really poor lenses, in order to gather information about the bottom level.

Since it's useless I may try to improve matters by painting the inside matt black - can't hurt anything. Now I see why it was almost brand-new looking - obviously owners had used it once and kept it at the back of a drawer, never to come out again until it was sold.

@ElanR.
Nice to know even Vivitar can royally screw it up Smile That must be a more impressive doorstop.
I'd thought about keeping a set of mediocre lenses as spares to hand out to anyone who was stuck and needed a loan of something, but that Marep would just put them off entirely.

This lens has got a T2-mount and a thread mount added. So it can come in several back mounts.

The ebay item is the one I bought - turned out to be M42 anyway. You can see from the pic of the front, a shoulder inside - that shoulder is actually a circular barrel which goes almost to the back of the lens and is ribbed, but the ribs are too small and too numerous and aren't black enough, so the light actually reflects off of it like a semi-glossy surface.

The one mentioned on the Minolta forum is the only other mention I found.
