A question for the russian lenses specialists here ...
I'd like to buy a Jupiter 9 and I am considering a new one from Rugift http://rugift.com/photocameras/jupiter_9_lens.htm
BUT ... I read somewhere that old Jupiter are better than new ones
Is that true ? |

This one is multicoated, 88 euros new look a nice price and you don't have to worry about mechanical problem or fungus _________________ T* |

Old Jupiter-9 is not multicoated so I'd say go for a new one. On the other hand, some people prefers the lower contrast of older versions.
There are several factors concurring, both pro and against:
- the first Russian lenses were made using Zeiss machinery by Zeiss engineers refugees. So they are likely to be excellent copies.
- until the 50s, lenses could use lead as coating material, and were more efficient than later lenses when lead was prohibited.
- on the other hand, lenses from the 80s on are mostly multicoated and therefore with less flare and more contrast
- like all Soviet countries, the decline in economy they had to suffer in their last 10-15 years has influenced the quality of the production also. For instance, the lastest Jena lenses have more quality control problem than earlier ones, this is the reason why some people like Attila trust more zebra or leatherette versions than MC versions.
- a danger of the older lenses and of Jupiter-9 in particular, is that they may have been opened for servicing by people not able to remount them properly, and for this reason, be decentred or with other defekts to focus scale, etc. So there is a risk in this because Jupiter-9 was much popular and at the same time, ultra-difficult lens to assemble-disassemble, so tehre is a high number of poorly reassembled J9s because of incompetent people opening them. With a new lens, you are safe.

I guess, as with the most good Russian lenses, you can get stellar performers or you can get a lemon, no matter when this lens was built.
So I also would prefer a new one if you can get it for a similar price.
You can still get rid of a J9 easily if you don't like your copy. _________________ Personal forum activity on pause every now and again (due to job obligations)!

Well, Attila offered me to buy a mint J9, I couldn't resist ...
Beside, I just learned that one of my girlfriend's coworkers is willing to pose for me ... a good opportunity to test that lens at f2.

The model is a cutie ... My girlfriend took some pics of her (http://billetdepimousse.over-blog.org/article-7338841.html) but I think the J9 will be more flattering at full aperture ...
My girlfriend (by the way, her name is Gina) is shooting with a Kodak bridge camera, so not a very MF person but she offered me a Helios 44. Did I told you she's perfect ? |

J9 can be solve skin problem, main reason why I prefer bit soft lens at wide open like J9 and this lens sharp enough for blue eyes.So I hope your g/f will change to MF lens after all she saw results _________________ -------------------------------

I wouldn't bet on it ... she's more of a "point and shoot" person. Can't appreciate the real beauty of a Pancolar Zebra |

Haha. I'm also trying like crazy to get my gf involved in the mf lens world. I even gave my sears TLS and sears 1.4/55mm to her as part of her christmas present!
I figure maybe if she likes it enough I wouldn't have to rationalize all of my purchases....maybe at least a few could slip under the "radar."

I like to hear that! Much better than plopping an autofocus digital into their hands right away.
But I must admit, as much as I joke about my gf, this christmas she got me a custom built 4x5 pinhole camera along with 50 sheets of kodak 400 t-max. Just amazing! So she feeds the addiction as much as I do. |

Ne le sois pas, ce n'est pas le nombre qui fait la qualité... 1/3 des optiques que je poss?de sont ? réparrer ou ? adapter pour fonctionner. Et regarde le J-9 que j'ai reçu derni?rement :
