Japan - Rolleiflex 3.5F

This April I spent four weeks in Japan. I have been in love with the traditional yet quirky culture for a long time, the mix of old and new, the fashion, the humour and of course the food. A fascinating country and indeed, a photographer's dream.

It was to be a testing ground for my newly renewed Rolleiflex 3.5F . The meter was a godsend, I'm not sure how I would have coped with my previous Rollei, often shooting opportunities arose and quick thinking was required.

In total I shot around 20 rolls of film, a lot of which I bought out there, including varieties that were not available outside of Japan and films I had yet to try. I also had almost every roll developed in Tokyo, as the process was similarly priced to the UK.

Here is a selection of shots from my trip, I haven't actually finished scanning all of the shots yet so I will be regularly adding new photos to my flickr page for some time yet.

Please click on the images for larger versions...

"Shidome Spring" - Kodak E100GX

"Torii Steps" - Fuji Provia 400X

"The Gateway" - Kodak E100GP

"Kamakura" - Fuji Provia 400X

"It happened one day, as Bo-peep did stray" - Fuji Provia 400X

"Sakura Showers"

"Neon Dream" - Fuji Provia 400X

"Electric Supernova" - Fuji Provia 400X

Thanks for looking.

Superb series, both the Kodak and Fuji film performed very well. You're
doing these at home on your Epson V700? I like Tokyo, hated driving in
it, tho. Laughing

Beautiful red in Torii Steps, and love the colors in Neon Dream.

Excellent work, and I checked out your flickr, some great stuff there as
well.

Excellent series - colors are beautifully saturated and not overdone. I agree with Bill on the Torii Steps pic (my favorite)

Really, with your use of narrow dof / selective focus, and color, and subject, we're transported to a magical Japan that shimmers in imagination. The adults tend to assume sculptural presence in "Sakura Showers", and Bo Peep is just an amazing fairy tale catch.

That's a great camera in service of a sensitive photographer.
