Hi here all mf lenses fans
I got two Zeiss Jena, on is a Tessar 2.8/50mm and has 276830 serial number, mainly black , very sharp lens and compact, but not that bright. produces good images though.
The other one is a Sonnar 135mm 3.5 and its amazing, the serial is 46201, all that i know that the 5 digits represent the lastest produced . very light, well built and sharp.
All those lenses are used with a X700 Minolta with the adapter as well as with a Praktica MTL5 ... 5B ! |

Question arise: does body have a serial too and what can it tell?
My Tessar 3.5/5cm (in process of cleaning) have additional serial # inscribed on body. Please check photos. What do mine lens body serial # tell: 016686? I guess according to top # it is pretty early sample: 3016251 ?
It might be interesting to build a database of still existing Kine Tessars.

Hi and welcome
Your lens is a Carl Zeiss lens made in West Germany or Japan, not a Carl Zeiss Jena (I think!). I reckon it is more likely to be 1980s or 1990s I could be completely wrong though _________________ Graham - Moderator

Is it a 2,4/35? Or a modern 20mm?
Zeiss skipped the millions-digits somewhen in their last decade before the end of the GDR. So it happens, that youcan find a 4,5 or 6 digit serial number.

Because it is one of the more recent lenses. More precisely, from December 4th, 1981 _________________ Orio, Administrator

I just got a contax III with a sonar on it and I’m quite puzzled..
According to the first post of this topic : the lens has been made between 1942 and 1945.
(Carl Zeiss Jena sonnar 50 1.5, red T, S/N : 2,857,916)
I could not get more precise description on the web (I guess every site has the same source or, worse, copy each on other..)
So I turned on the body. Making the assumption the body and the lens has not been unpaired, the year of production of the lens and of the body should be close.
Unfortunately the body (S/N : C10988) is supposed to be produced in 1936-7 according to cameraquest (http://www.cameraquest.com/zconrf2.htm )

hi everyone,
I've been learning a lot from this forum but didn't register until I read this post. Thanks to the earlier contributors to this thread!
I just got a CZJ Flektogon 2.4/35 with a 4-digit serial number of 6***, which I suppose it was produced in the late 80s' according to the origianl post.
But here is a weird thing: I found the following lens on the Taobao (Chinese version of ebay) with a 6-digit serial number "112592", but from the appearance of the lens one can easily tell it's definitely not from a time back to the 1910s'.
Here is the original link (yeah I know you guys probably don't read Chinese but just scroll down and look at the pics):
http://item.taobao.com/item.htm?spm=a230r.1.10.37.eTDhWq&id=21067792955&_u=t3ou2hsafda
