Today - 25 April - is our great National Day - ANZAC Day - and it is a public holiday.
Interestingly, it is also a National Day in Turkey for the same event. More on this later.
Today we commemorate the lives of those who have served our country in time of conflict, with special emphasis on those who were lost and those affected by war. It is a time for remembering and for collective gratitude - not just to the fallen, but to all - and also to the way our history has shaped our country and our culture.
Every town and village has a commemoration ceremony at dawn, and then another in the mid morning.
I attended the mid-morning function.
Ours was rather large, and it is difficult to find a vantage point from which to photograph the whole scene.
I have tried to get some images with the 1.4/55 but of course this means getting in close.
You won't appreciate the size of the gathering but at least the lens will show its merits.
All shot wide open or close to it. Sadly I left the camera setting on jpeg and the results are a little rich.
Here we go.
OH

We will remember them ..........
.......Lest we forget

If I had known Glen Moore would have been there playing the Trumpet I would have had you say hello Razz

He looks wonderfully swirly.

Glenn played his last post as Port Macquarie Hastings Municipal Band leader.
This was his last function and he is retiring as band leader.
I leaned over to him and had a quick word while he was waiting to play The Last Post.
I noticed that his mouthpiece was missing and thought he might have an embarrassing moment when the time came.
It was in his pocket staying warm Embarassed

Nicely done with your images and the others tweaked by Dave and Pancolart. I was up at the crack of dawn, but did not attend the service, hearing the last post played across the town (complete with early Autumn fog) was emotional enough.

Thanks Mo.
The ceremony is always a moving one for me as well.
Here is an image that I took at Gallipoli in 2011. (Canon Powershot SX10-IS)
Anzac Cove

And as seen from the heights - the ruggedness of the country over which the battles were fought:
