My kids were complete and utter shits, and my lens was a crappy Domiplan.

This is sort of a tangential comment.
When I want to travel very light, I'll often consider just grabbing one of my 35mm rangefinders -- or P&S cameras. I have several, and I've found that choosing which one to take can by itself be a process all its own. Focal length, maximum aperture, built-in or accessory flash -- or no flash -- degree of compactness, etc.
I gotta admit, though, that more times than not, it comes down to emotional attachment. Which means I usually grab my Canon QL17. It's really hard to go wrong with that camera. And the fact that it has a fixed lens just makes me think more about composition. My feet become my zoom, or my apparent focal length. _________________ Michael

Here some representative shots with my Samyang 8mm F3.5 MC Fisheye
It's very flare resistant and sharp
CAs are very well handeled
It has great colors
And it's distortition ist quite good for a fisheye, compared to for example Peleng 8mm F3.5 _________________ I'm not a collector, I'm a tester

Wow. Now I can see why you like that lens so much.
Me, I'm kinda torn between my few fast lenses: Canon FD 85mm f/1.2 SSC, FL 55mm f/1.2, and a couple of Tamrons, the SP 80-200mm f/2.8 LD, and the SP 300mm f/2.8 LDIF. These are all great lenses, and I use them all in different situations. The biggest drawback to the Canons is they are of very limited usefulness with my EOS DSLR. They produce fantastic slide images, however. Nonetheless, my favorite of the lot remains the FD 85mm f/1.2.
FD 85mm f/1.2 SSC wide open at f/1.2. EOS DSLR with FD-EOS adapter, element removed.
A 100% crop of the above image:
FD 85/1.2 wide open af f/1.2, Canon F-1, Kodachrome 64. Duped (not scanned) with my EOS DSLR and duplicator rig.

Mine is my Tokina RMC 3.5/17mm. I just adore the perspectives it gives, I mostly shoot landscapes so this is pretty much the perfect lens. IQ is fantastic, sharp as a pointy stick in the eye, immense depth of field, contrast is superb and colours come out rich and bright. |
Interesting! I just bought one, but I haven't had a chance to use it yet.
As to the favorite lens I have, that would be, uh, hmm. Difficult choice. My most useful lens isn't necessarily my favorite, and my favorite isn't my most useful.
My Nikkor 28/2 Ai lives on my camera--it goes everywhere because it's so useful. But, I prefer using my Nikkor 20/3.5 Ai-S whenever possible. I love the perspective difference.
My favorite, however, is pretty much my Zoom Nikkor 25-50/4 Ai-S. It's not as sharp as either the 28/2 or the 20/3.5, but it makes up for it with the best color rendition of any lens I have, no visible CA, and (stopped down one or two stops, anyway) is quite sharp enough corner to corner. Even though it's a zoom, distortion isn't any worse than the 28/2. Also, it's a gorgeous lens; a perfect example of a time when Nikon built quality you could feel into every lens it made. Still, since it weighs 600g, I'm not really fond of lugging it around unless it's the only lens I have with me. And, of course, being so slow sometimes limits its usefulness. Within its limitations, it *is* my favorite lens to use. |

Similarly, my recently acquired Vivitar 24/2 is also growing on me. I guess it would be that along with my Pentax 50/1.7. Both pretty cheap in comparison to others but works for me. |
