Holy Smokes. Saw a Contax 193 on CL today, peeling and worn, but it had a Planar 50 1.4 on it that looked pristine. I talked the seller down a few bucks, $200 instead of $220, was her Grandmother's camera. I still agonized a bit, that's a good price but not the best ever for the Planar. When I got there, she said, oh yeah, I didn't mention it in the ad, but there's another lens in there. I felt around, Zeiss pouch, paid and left. There were 2 additional lenses in bag. Distagon 28/2.8 and Sonnar 135/2.8, mint with caps. My $200 deal turned out pretty good!

Great buy, especially if its the earlier type (with the serial number on the front ring and f16 as the smallest aperture). But even if it's the later compact one, $10 is hard to beat.

Don't know nothing about that Vatican dweller but the lens has those 2 features:serial number on the front ring and f16 as the smallest aperture.
What would be the value under those circumstances? _________________ Moderator Himself |

Oh and I think I got a damn good price on a mint Canon FD100 F2.0 for $200 compared to current sales prices too. |

What is the value of your lens is not a question one can answer just like that. The price you paid is a great bargain IMO. But if you check sold listings on Ebay (http://tinyurl.com/owg2m3n - this link is legit, I made it because the Ebay one was a tapeworm 3 lines long), you will see that similar bargains are frequent. It is not a "very valuable" Hexanon, mostly because it is one of the 2 most common Hexanons out there, the other one being the 50/1.7. That is why there is never a lineup for them. Those selling theirs for, say, $50 or $60 are either lucky (lots of potential buyers that particular day) or they caught an impulse buyer. Still, this lens usually goes for several times what you paid for it, depending on condition, version, completeness (caps, case, hood, box). Most seem to go for anywhere between $25 and $50. Of the various types of 28/3.5, the most desirable is the larger one (SN on the front ring and f16) with a rubber clad focusing ring. Those were made from 1973 to 1978. The later the better, because of the coatings, which evolved significantly over the 1970s. You can tell the year from the production code on the rear of the lens: The number stands for the year; the letter for the month. Arguably, the compact 28/3.5, made from 1976 to 1981 and maybe later, may have even better coatings, but it is an optically simpler construction (5/5) and, all things considered, is not quite as performing as the earlier version. _________________

I got a boxed T2 Microscope adapter complete with 'no-name' 2.5x eyepiece out of the bargain basket at Real Camera for £5. I'm particularly happy with the 2.5x eyepiece, they are very rare indeed. Sometimes 100 times magnification is too much, now I can go as low as 15 times. The adapter is great too, I tried it with my NEX. Great. _________________ Hero in the 'messin-with-cameras-for-the-hell-of-it department'. Official. |

Not dirt cheap (single digit dollars) like many bargains here, but considering its original purchase price it was a steal.

Frankly, a slow (but heavy) lens that has no mount, tripod ring, and focusing system is just a 29ukp doorstop. No matter if the brand is Zeiss. _________________ If raindrops were perfect lenses, the rainbow did not exist. |

Seriously and embarrassingly great find.

Wow, thanks! I'd never heard of the EF to be honest, when I worked in retail it was always the lower end models we sold, so its a good camera then?
It had the 50mm f1.8 on it, and when I looked in the cases I found the Miranda's, nothing special to me, then I opened a lens pouch and saw the 24mm and decided to buy it, the 50mm f1.4 was a clincher.
I offered £30 expecting to be haggled. I had £50 in my pocket, she agreed on £30 immediately. I probably could have got it cheaper.
We've had three millionaire lottery wins in my workplace in the last 6 months, so I reckon this was my slice of the luck. _________________ Hero in the 'messin-with-cameras-for-the-hell-of-it department'. Official. |

Canon EF - vertical focal plane shutter - very big deal for its day.
Flash sync at 1/125sec (I thought that this was big deal at the time)
Mechanical shutter speeds from 1/1000 down to 1sec then electronically controlled up to 30secs - huge deal at the time.
Capable of metering at ISO3200 (if you could push film that far) again a big deal at the time.
Solid, beautifully built no nonsense get the job done every time camera.
And it was all black like the F1
Loved it
PS - forgot to mention its revolutionary feature of shutter speed priority auto exposure.
There was a huge debate in those days about which was best - aperture priority (Av) or shutter speed priority auto exposure.
No one was offering both yet, and the world settled into two camps Canon went for shutter speed priority and most of the rest went aperture.
Is it any wonder that Canon was preferred for sporting events as a result.
Incidentally - even today at sports events the numbers of white tele lenses dominate don't they.
Ahh good times great memories

EF's are great cameras, the shutter speed dial hangs over the front edge to facilitate change while the camera is eye held. It was kind of considered a slightly lower spec F1 as a back up for the pro. The other great M/F camera of that time from Canon was the FTb with its quick load system. The EF is a nice solid chunk though and I prefer it to the F1.
Congrats, I'd have paid that for the camera alone, (not that I need a third model). _________________ A whole bunch of stuff. |

Thanks OH, I have a couple of large cameras now, I missed the feel and weight of the Nikkormat FTn when I sold it, the Minolta XE-1 made up for it and this Canon just oozes quality and solidity. I love it. I've got a nice set of lenses for each. Which to use?
The original owner kept all his receipts and manuals, and I keep finding little notes in the bags etc mentioning how to use the Hanimex with the EF as its an FL mount not an FD, when he changed the batteries (every three years), and other information like sunny 16 and exposure times for AG1 bulbs, he even kept the price label and kimble tag from the gadget bag. Which incidentally went through the washing machine successfully and smells fragrant now.
Oh! I am happy! And thanks for the positive comments, reinforcing my belief that I have a bargain. _________________ Hero in the 'messin-with-cameras-for-the-hell-of-it department'. Official. |
