The two ring focus/zoom.
Excuse the flowers again - dearth of subject matter in the garden presently.

Thanks.
It is very hot here and tinder dry. The pics were taken early this morning.
No bushfires here at present but we had one close by last week.
I have family in the Blue Mountains and they are very anxious at the moment.

This is made by Kiron. I have the two touch 70-150 baby brother version made by Komine. Absolutely fantastic build, sharpness and color. These Vivitar lenses are superb instruments.

Yes, they are extremely well made.
Kiron also made a 70-150 f3.8 as well as an 85-205 f3.8.
All are two touch zooms and perform very nicely as well.
Thanks for your input - I was unaware of the Komine version.

Kiron starts with 22 and Komin starts with 28 on serial numbers. I will post some pics tomorrow. Smile

Here are the Vivitar/Kiron two touch zooms. All have serial numbers 22XXXXXX.
I am looking forward to seeing how similar the Komine might be.

My bad. It would seem that mine is also made by Kiron. It is one touch instead of two. I must have this confused with my 135 2.8 which is made by Komine.

I have not seen one of these before.

Hi,
which of the three lenses do you find to have better quality? I can see from the shots that the 70-150 has a focus distance of 0.9 meters. Is this performance consistent across the focal range?

Now lets compare that with a modern lens like the SEL55210
http://www.photozone.de/sony_nex/729-sony55210f4563nex

there is written that
min. focus distance 1 m (max. magnification ratio 1:4.4)
(does it also mean that it focus always at 1m regardless of the focal lenth?)

Regards
A.

I can only comment on the two touch zooms as I do not have the other example.
All three lenses show very similar results to my eye and I would find it hard to rank them in performance.
The 70-150 is smaller and lighter, so easier to use.
I do not know the Sony lens so cannot comment. I would expect it to be better, but the reviewer gave it only fair marks for optical quality - it still may be better than the Vivitars as the sensor on the camera would be very demanding of its lenses.
Finally, the two touch zooms focus down to around 1-1.5 metres in their normal zoom range (70-150 etc) but the zoom ring rotates past the 70 mark for close focus - and then they can focus more closely. The zoom ring can no longer be used at this setting - it remains fixed in the close focus position. Move the camera and lens in and out to the subject for focus and composition.

This is my go-to lens for focal lengths higher than 70mm. Tanks in some countries are not built as solid as this lens -- lots of metal and lots of great glass were used by Kiron. Reasonably fast, a joy to handle, and a perfect mix of sharpness, bokeh and colour in a fairly-priced unit.

I have the Vivitar 70-150mm f3.8 Close Focusing Auto Zoom in two ring design. The serial number begins 37XXXXX and thus I believe it is made by TOKINA. It has a TX adapter mount. It looks somewhat similar to the Kiron but has only two rings of rubber texture grip. There is a 6 blade aperture with only full stops between f3.8 and f22. Close focus available only at the 70mm focal length.

I also have a Ricoh "XR Rikenon Zoom 1:4 70-150mm Macro". They are very similar except for the f3.8 vs f4.0 and the Rikenon has an 8 blade aperture. I like the feel and look of the Rikenon over the Vivitar but I have not compared the image qualities.

Yes, Tokina has produced some fine lenses over the years.
Here is a link to some discussion of the Vivitar 70-150 in several guises:
