I while ago I put up a thread about vintage cameras . . .
Well after much viewing and thinking I went after a camera and won it today . . .
Click here to see on Ebay
1 Zeiss Ikon Contaflex . . . comparing it to the manuals on Mike Butkus' site I think it is a Contaflex super.
Its within my comfort zone as a 35mm slr, but being a non electronic camera with a single lens it will be a different sort of "beast". And contrary to the posted amount for S&H its only costing $15us - I think $43.00 US total wasn't a bad investment.
Anybody know why it is that these old German cameras can grab you - I know that its Zeiss, I like the looks of it, and any others I've either bid on or thought about bidding on were also old german cameras. . .
I found a link to a guy doing CLAs on older cameras http://www.camera-care.com/service_info.htm and to quote him

Another thought to consider is that since 1946 there has not been any real improvement of a camera's ability to render an image on film. Yes, I agree that cameras have gotten easier to use and certainly more affordable but put the same film in a 1955 Leica and any current 35mm camera you choose and I assure you that if anything the vintage 1955 Leica will yield the superior image. And by going to digital― image quality has actually taken a dramatic step backward. So there is a definite logic in keeping your beloved film camera operating at the peak of its performance. |
I guess this was the catalyst for the purchase - not to mention its directly related to my little Contaflex126
Now, like so many others I'll just have to find time to shoot some film

Congrats Jim! It looks like a super beauty. I love the style of this era of Zeiss. A friend of mine just gave me a Tenax with a 2.8/50 tessar. I have yet to shoot it. It is also from the era although much simpler than this one with straight scale focus. Enjoy _________________ Moderator |

Those Contaflexes are very nice cameras !
Why do they grab you ? I think its the workmanship. These things were very obviously made with great skill, and there is great satisfaction in handling such things. _________________ I like Pentax DSLR's, Exaktas, M42 bodies of all kinds, strange and cheap Japanese lenses, and am dabbling in medium format/Speed Graphic work. |

That's definately a part of it - the knowledge that something more went into it in the quality of the build. Hopefully I'm not going to be disappointed in the idea that this one should shoot as good as my Contaflex126 if not better. There's almost a siren's song in these older cameras, they speak of what they may have seen, and therefore they almost cry out to keep being used. I'm hoping this camera as it is still different from my newer slrs will help sharpen my skills.
This community can take the credit/blame for me to become interested in these old guys.
This is camera number six

I also bought one of these (Super B) a few weeks ago... and now have a pair of interchangeable backs too... and have yet to take a single shot in anger. Now I guess I have just been shamed into so doing?
They are beautiful pieces of mechanical art, and with their labyrinth design they don't even require the grotty foam seals that perish on lesser beasts!
Congratulations on your purchase and welcome to the Contaflex addicts club! _________________ Lenses and cameras:
