This is the LENS, clearly shows why you need to pay this amount for this lens! Superb! Thank you for sharing!

Excellent Poilu.

I live your focus on the next to last shot, I would have done the same.

This is an excellent series! It makes me feel like being there, and like Attila said, the Contax 1.4/85 is THE lens.
I find them all lovely, but the special one for me is the last one of the first batch (the three children on the fountain), now that shot really makes me envious as I would like to have done it myself!!

Thanks!
immediately after this shot, the father came in my exact position to try the same with his p&s!
I was lucky he didn't ask me why I photographed his children; delicate subject but children always give nice shots

dear poilu!!! you have recalled me April this year when I received my Planar 1.4/85 - I took only 50 trial shot then aperture stuck for unknown reason!!! I had to return it. Full refund was given to me but I was crying for my planar 1.4/85 and now I am asking myself if money is everything Smile))

Yeah ! It clearly shows it !!!
The choice in 85mm is just too much ..
Every lense looks to be a must have, the different zeiss, famous helios, takumar, and now this one !
Maybe oly can take a backseat in this league..
Shots that make you wanna observe, marvel & feel....

some examples of my former planar 1.4/85 - I have to buy new one in the future Smile))

the spring was coming over and I was very keen on shooting trees and flowers, animals and of course, my daughter as well ...

Great pictures, poilu and trifox.
I will get one for sure to fill in the missing link.
It has the sharpness I want and bokeh that I like.
What is the normal price?
Price from eBay varies a bit, from about $500 - $1000.

Great samples trifox!

You make the case for the lens with this gallery.

I was able to buy a new one for $650 US because it was the earlier, classic all black model, instead of silver ring which was 20-25% more money.

I tested four CZ biotar 75/1.5, and one 1935 model is so sharp that if pics were not compared side by side, it might be seen as equal to 85/1.4. 85 can't be beat though, for sharp or bokeh, and color and contrast give that incomparable look.

Nice to see you again Bobb!

Maybe it's my eyes but the bokeh from the Poilou series and Trifox ones seems quite different, especially in reflective whites. Maybe it's just a matter of different f-stops even if the cat shots seem taken wide open too.

Perhaps Poilu had better light, strong southern daylight.

Can't get over the colors in these, superb! This is really starting to elevate
my hate/envy quotient... Laughing

I actually prefer a lot more Trifox's lens bokeh. Less harsh with lines and highlights. Personal taste, so don't shoot me Wink

Seeing these pictures makes me so happy - guess what I have coming in the post tomorrow? :-p

superb samples & great portraits trifox!
in fact it look more like the contrast I get from the camera
usually I boost levels in pp to match my taste

dakoo wrote:

not many people shot a 85mm at 1.4
don't forget that after 3.5, most 85mm have about same level

esrods wrote:

my MM copy was 300 euros. better wait for a MM version as the AE has ninja star bokeh that much complain against

bad thing when you try Zeiss, better stay away

Alessandro wrote:

must be the softer light
actually the planar bokeh is quite busy. but the separation and 3D is such that it is not disturbing, at least for my taste
Leica bokeh is smoth like butter, actually I read that it's easier to make a smoth bokeh
I get used to this strong character and now I appreciate it but it is true that many don't like it

Sorry to hear about your broken foot, poilu! Sad It seems that we are breaking a lot of bones lately around here. Shocked

Yes, the lens is superb, of course. But...the photographer is OUTSTANDING. Just beautiful compositions and great "catch" on the children at the fountain. Also, the colors in all is so rich and vibrant, yet not over-contrasty.

An extremely enjoyable and professionally rendered series.
