I have a chance to buy one of these. I'm not sure why I want it except that it's a very impressive chunk of metal and glass (2.2 kg). Does anyone have any experience ?

Gets a good write-up, even if at second hand http://adaptall-2.com/lenses/05A.html

Thanks Dave. I've seen the adaptall site. A simple "google" search reveals very little else. I was wondering if anyone had actually used it.

Mel Unruh has...

And BobbyR...

Mind you, I don't know these people, so take your chances. On balance, I'd have it if it's cheap enough.

Thanks again Dave.

I had seen the Mel Unruh post - but I hadn't read it properly. It looks promising. I hadn't seen the second one which is helpful in terms of price.

The guy wants £89. That includes a Nikon Ai adapter. If I can get him down to £75 (without the adapter since I've already got one) I might go for it. At the very least he should let me step outside the shop and take a few shots.

Once again, thanks.

274mm long, filter size 82mm! What a monster!
And pretty fast (f4.5) for such a zoom range.

Hi Attila.

Yes it looks attractive. I'm not sure if I want it yet, but if I don't I'll get it for you. I only had a quick look this afternoon but it looked clean. I'll have a closer look tomorrow and see if I can get it, and under what terms. The shop offers a six month guarantee.

British Royal Mail only accepts packages up to 2kg (airmail AND surface mail). The weight of the lens is 2.2 kg. Packaging will take this up to near 2.5 kg. I'll try and find a courier and let you know the cost.

Best Wishes

Many thanks John! Try to light throw the lens and look edges, if it has fungus or haze inside difficult or impossible to remove from glued lens tags.

I had a good look at the lens this morning.

The guy in the shop was willing to sell it for £79 without the adapter which was OK. I put it on my D40x and took a few shots (handheld with great difficulty) outside the shop.

I can see the attraction of the lens. Zooming in from 70 to 350 was a delight. Unfortunately, infinity seemed a little short and there was more purple fringing than I would have liked.

Stopping down from wide open might have helped. Unfortunately the aperture ring was very stiff and the coupling, between the adapter and the internal aperture control mechanism, had slipped. The guy in the shop was not willing to reduce the price. So I made my excuses and left.

Even with problems price wasn't high at all.
