Canon FD should be up amongst the short list, but unfortunately I don't own one.

Not the Kiron 2/24, it's not sharp until f4. The Canon FD 2/24 has a stellar reputation but it's not easy to find.

Personally, I think the Konica Hexanon 2.8/24 is amazing, very usable wide open, distortion, even on full frame is very well controlled and it has 3D pop like a Zeiss T* lens. Contrast is very strong and it's very flare resistant, I'll never part with it. I shot this wide open the other day with mine.

Canon (New) FD 24/2

Definitely better than Kiron and Nikon.

Well I agree with the FD, I had a set of FD lenses before, and that lens was a gem! if we talk about 28mm I will say Pentax K28 f/2 (it's even better than the mother Zeiss 28mm f/2 "HollyWood"). Next maybe the Nikkor 28mm f/2 AIS...

Best,
JDS

may I ask why you need especially f2? why not f1.4? or f2.8?
@2.8 choice is much larger

thanks everyone, seems so far the FD is the only choice.

ive been at photography for three decades and i know 24/2.8 and 28s have much more choice, and i have lots of experience with them, so i have my own set opinions about them

i dont have any direct experience with 24/2, so if anyone wants to offer their user opinions on other than the FD, i'd really love to hear it!

The Nikon 24/2 is OK but not as good as the 24/2.8 and the Olympus Zuiko 24/2 is better and smaller as far as I remember. But not as good as the 24/2.8...I think!

I've tried Komine and Kiron 24/2 lenses and they are both average.

H'mm well there is the Vivitar (Komine) 24mm f2, I've done a few tests with a crappy OM20 with the manual speeds not working...and it's a bit soft wide open and at f2 flares easily but stopped down seems sharp enough, but have no idea if it should be in the short list for "the best 24mm lenses".

I had good experience with Kiron and Nikon both wide open.

thanks guys!

hoan, i assue the zeiss 24/1.8 youre talking about is a sony mount apsc lens, not a mf lens, right?

yes, it's af lens. but also it is the best 24 i have tried so far.

Well, I have 2 spare FD 24mm f2 (one in EOS mount), but I wouldn't be able to ship anything before December. I can confirm, it's a top lens though, one of my favourites. That's why I ended up with so many spares.

Canon nFD 24 f2 - wide open
EOS 5DMkII - LightRoom.

Weird bokeh, like a zoom effect almost.

i didnt know you had a 5dii, cool. awesome clarity, funky bokeh.

I'll just echo the nFD 24/2. It's a truly stellar lens; one of the best of the entire FD system. The quality well exceeds the 24/2.8 in terms of sharpness, bokeh, and build. The Vivitar 24/2 is a decent consolation lens. Expect $450-500 for the nFD in very good condition; there's always some on eBay.

I don't know how it performs in distortion and the size is doubled but Samyang 24/1.4 might be an option (correction and sharpness is better than the FD)

Nikkor 24/2 at f2.0

This lens also has a pretty funky Bokeh. I love it in some shots and sometimes it just look retarded.

Yup most good 24mm I've lenses have a funky bokeh, some more, some less

The best 24mm lens I personally tried was the latest Minolta MD 24/2.8 btw.; it's one stop slower thouh.
