I recently discovered this great lens! I read in the website that it's one of the best, second to the Helios-44-2 in terms of image quality and popularity. The focal length in the lens will double a bit on cropped sensor I'll be getting roughly 150mm and that's neither too long or short for me. Perfect, actually. I never really heard of it though and would like to know more. Can you tell me about your experiences with the lens and much it costs? I don't have a budget for it as of now but I want a rough idea on how much I need to save up for.

Sample pictures would be appreciated! Thanks.

I had this lens parallel with Leica-R 90mm f2.8 second version which is best version, I didn't see much difference, especially with a simple auto contrast fix, good lens.

I like this lens very much. I don't find it second to the Helios-44, much sharper in my opinion. The M42 mount can be troublesome by interfering with the aperture function if it gets too tight with the adapter. Nikon mount seems to work better. Mine came with both mounts for $63.

As member aoleg sad/wrote:

"... I like the colors of the Kaleinar better, but the Nikon is more resistant to flare - despite being single-coated vs. MC Kaleinar. Sharpness is perfectly fine in both lenses, but the Nikon is made better. I know, I know, it's plastic... but the Kaleinar is just terrible: loose tolerances, rough focusing, dirty optics - and I'm talking about three samples of this lens, including one brand-new! Besides, the Kaleinar is prone to internal hazing. Many used samples were disassembled by their owners and put to what they thought was good cleaning; as a result, those samples have internal scratches and multiple cleaning marks that are worse than the hazing."

What I see here is a very good lens performance in a - say - normal usage. Some months ago I lost a bid for cents of a CZ Sonnar 3.5/100, and I'm wondering about to acquire a copy of this lens now,

Cheers,

Renato

I find that a M42 adapter when screwed tight restricts aperture ring movement. Does anyone else have that problem or have a cure for it? I'm thinking of switching to Nikon mount and buying an adapter. Also, which Nikon adapter is correct for this? I'm not familiar with Nikon mounts.

Don't buy the 'flanged' m42 adapters unless you have to. They also foul the aperture rotation of late takumars. These adapters have an extra lip at the bottom to depress the aperture pin of 'auto aperture' M42 lenses.

Later generations of M42 lenses omitted the 'manual' or preset aperture opting for a pin that sticks out the back of a lens to allow the camera to stop the lens down during the exposure vs the photographer having to manually close the aperture ring prior.

These lenses require 'flanged' adapters as there is no other way to 'stop' them down on our digital cameras.

Some more recent M42 lenses like the late takumars have an additional metal guide that moves alongside the rim of the rear element when you turn the aperture ring to allow for auto-exposure/in-camera metering. This aperture guide is directly linked to the aperture ring and is clamped by the flange on the m42 adapter which is why you feel that the ring becomes stuck.

(fished off google. See the aperture guide is the metal tab at the 12 o'clock position)
