The Sony A7 and the A7R have been available for a few months now. Which camera is better for the average manual focus lens user, given that the price would be the same for both?

From what I have seen, I would opt for the A7.

but in this case:

the A7r has the advantage of more MP. For this reason it is of advantage for those / pros who expect to make big prints..only, maybe also for some who don't compose when taking photos but when cropping heavily Wink
The A7 has somewhat faster AF and handles RF wide angles better. Therefore it is the better option for all that don't need the extra MP, specially for MF lens user who also wish to use RF wide angles.

anybody contradict?

I have got the A7 and after reading about shake issues on the r model, feel vindicated. I have no need for 36mp, not many do I'm sure. My Epson had 6.1 mp but the colours and pictures it could provide were absolutely fine for me. I'm very impressed with the Sony camera so far but I do feel that the day isn't far away when I will have to resort to A/F lenses when I'll be bidding a sad farewell to all my MF glass.
Sigh. Confused

A7 will be more than enough, and in many cases as mentioned a better choice than the R Wink
And you can buy a handful of nice MF lenses with it for the price of the R.

I will still keep my R though Very Happy

The 7r does not work with the CV15. Corner mush.

When I tried it in a shop, the VF was much easier to use for focussing than the manual focussing screen on my ordinary FF-SLR. Not to speak of the need with my SLR to use a screen in strong daylight in order to get "live view" and magnification. More like "dead view" then. So electronic view , but inside the viewfinder, is the future.

The chance to crop , crop and crop just like in the darkroom, and with more sucess than with fp4 is interesting. One of the posters above may be more finicky than me, but to me , precise framing may be achievable with a zoom, not with a fixed focal length even if I move about, so large files are nice to have (but not to handle).

BUT in addition to the 7r being useless for the shortest CV and probably for short Leitz and Zeiss M-optics, it also has a stupid hump in the middle (in order to look like an SLR and sell better ?).Why not pocketable?

Fuji does without a hump, and Sony are masters of miniaturization, so once they have reformed their sensel lenses along Leica lines, and if they are able to make something that will actually fit in my pocket. I may be interested. Provided they do not add (or keep) battery draining screens, wifi and other junk on the newer models. Make the frills small modules that you may use as needed and sell the basic camara to the poor, with bling for those who wish to pay for it.

OK, a bit higher photon to charge conversion efficiency, less noise and a dial that can force it to use a certain shutter time and a minimum of need to be faffing about with menus.

Then I might be tempted to get it.
