A lot of people are waiting for this and the price isn't as eye watering as I would have thought.
If this is true that is...........................

I love my OM-D, but if Sony show up with a retro, OM-D look alike FF mirrorless, with the 5 axis IBIS, then I am sold Twisted Evil

I need to start saving! Very Happy

This is very tempting! mirrorless 35mm, now that makes sense. OTOH, apparently, there's no IBIS Sad

I'll wait for adapter! Smile

Oh, apparently, Sony will use the Alpha designation for the new cams, A7 and A7r (more confusion with Minolta Alpha 7.)

The sonyalpharumors.com site reported this yesterday. Today they've refined things a bit, moving away from Oly-looking cameras to describing the pair of cameras as having a NEX-7-style grip, an EVF in the middle and RX-1 size. They further went on to state that according to a separate rumor, the EVF will rest inside a hump that is styled to look a whole lot like the old Minolta XD-7's -- which means XD-11 or XD-5 as well. Those are not unhandsome cameras, by any means. What I find interesting about this, if it is indeed true is that Sony will be the first manufacturer since Canon designed the first slippery looking SLR back in the mid-80s, the T90, to take a truly retro step back to a more angular design. I may be full of it, but we will soon see, won't we. All the rumors sites are still saying these cameras are to be announced later this month.

I wouldn't be so sure about there not being IBIS on these cameras. Have you heard there won't be? The reason why I state this is because of the announcement of a shared tech agreement between Sony and Olympus and the rumors at least have claimed that this is so that Sony can get their hands on IBIS. Perhaps too late in the game for these too models? I don't know, maybe so.

Still no word on the NEX-7's replacement yet.

Not really. It's predictable, in fact. Sony already owns the trademarks to "Alpha 7" so they may as well use it. The Minolta name is but a fading memory for a few of us older codgers anyway. And besides, it was Minolta anyway that began the whole 3-5-7 naming strategy that Sony continued with the NEX. (X370, X570, X700, for example, which continued over to the Minolta Maxxum models as well)

Canon has recycled its trademark names for years, so why shouldn't Sony? For example, Canon makes an XH A1s video camera, and I'm sure the "A1" part of that name was an intentional reuse of the "A-1" name from their SLR of the late 70s and early 80s. I've seen this with other products whose names escape me at the moment. It's the sort of thing where when I see it in passing, I go, "Oh, hey, I know where they got that name from," but then I never bother to hang onto the memory cuz I have no reason to.

Not sure if it's affordable enough but rumour has that it's going for the cheapest FF in the market excluding 2nd hand and discontinued models of course.

http://www.sonyalpharumors.com/sr5-a7-price-lower-than-current-canon-and-nikon-ff-cameras/

Will attract a lot of ppl whose thinking of upgrading to FF definitely, as well as MFers Very Happy and videographers.

But I think Canon and Nikon still have their markets. After all, how many E mount FF lenses are they going to release? And are you willing to switch to LA-EA2 + A mount FF lenses if you are already using Canon or Nikon for professional use such as wedding, events, studio, sports, etc.

Sony's move is very aggressive, will shake the market and force Canon, Nikon and other manufacturers to react. Good for consumers indeed!! Laughing

I'll wait and see the price before I get excited. I doubt they will be affordable for me. I had a quick play with an A3000 today, and it's 300ukp body only, with incredibly cheap, nasty build quality and terribly outdated screen and evf that would be useless for manual lenses, so if that's how much Sony have to charge for such a shoddy nasty camera, then I get the feeling a really nice one will be way out of my reach financially. Sad

Exactly. On Adorama it costs around 100 dollars less than a nex F3, which isn't even the latest nex-3 model.
Plus it has a newer sensor with higher resolution, and other little features. So they had to save money somewhere and differentiate it from other products that they sell for higher prices.

I don't know what price to expect from the full frame nexes: it should be something between the cheapest new FF cameras (like nikon D600 and eos 6D), and the most expensive sony's APS-C's, like nex-7 and a77 (or they future substitutes).

I read somewhere a price quote that was around 2500...

My expectation is based on the "affordable" stated above, and a good dose of wishful thinking.
I wouldn't be much surprised if both will turn out to be wrong Sad

I guess I'll have to wait for the 20mp APS-C sensor in a good body.

Or sell a kidney....

Mirrorless rumours quotes the price of 1600-1700 $/Eur, for the body only A7, which is a 24MP camera with hybrid PDAF/CDAF. A7r will have a 36MP sensor and cost more. A7 sounds very attractive.

well this is certainly an important step in the continuing mirrorless evolution. i certainly understand why many, including me in theory, are excited by this. but personally, given the extraordinary performance of both apsc and even m4/3, i'm holding a bit more of a higher standard than simply full frame. i want no AA filter, some kind of IBIS, some analogue controls like on the xp1, and off center vf without a middle hump, more akin to rf style, and less than $2000. thats just me, i know many will love and do very good work with this new sony offering.

Well, according to the folks over at sonyalpharumors.com, it looks like October 16th will be the day they make their big announcement - in Hong Kong, at least. 5-6am London Time and sonyalpharumors is supposedly going to be carrying the event live. The rumors site also shows a sketch of the new A7 and A7r -- they claim that everybody who has seen the cameras state that this sketch is accurate. I have to say it is a rather unusually looking camera, especially for a mirrorless. I can only assume that Sony has decided not to pull any punches with that new EVF. I'll wager it will be outstanding.

The author writes, "The camera is weathersealed and has the size of an Olympus OMD. And it has a solid Pentax LX feeling."

Interesting -- the feel of a Pentax LX? I wonder how many people have even had the pleasure of holding an LX? I have, but I'll bet that even most Pentax users haven't. The LX is a fantastic MF SLR, by the way, just in case you didn't know. Still goes for serious bux on eBay too.

Further down the page, they also preview a new Zeiss zoom for the FF cameras: a 70-210mm f/4. Whew, I'll bet that will be one nice zoom.

I am really excited about this. I´m starting to look for decent E-mount adapters Wink

This is what I have been wating for! FF mirrorless that can mount anything, yes! Very Happy

Apparently the sensor even has offset micro lenses like the Leica M240.

PostPosted: Sat Oct 12, 2013 2:33 pm    Post subject: Reply with quote

launch price of body only said to be 1,698 usd, and with 28-70 kit zoom 1,998 usd

If that sketch is accurate, it's going to be a pretty ugly looking thing with the EVF perched on top like it was an afterthought. Sad

PostPosted: Sat Oct 12, 2013 5:41 pm    Post subject: Reply with quote

It is only a sketch. Rumors say it will look like a Minolta x700, a beautiful camera... I don't really like the NEX design, so I am happy if it looks more like a real camera. Very Happy

As long as IQ, size and the posibility to mount any lens is there. That is enough for me. I am 99% sure that this is my new camera! Wink

I have sold away AF lenses for $2000 the last week, so I am ready to push the buy button! Very Happy

Until we see the actual camera, I'm reserving judgement. Having seen the terrible crap that is the A3000, I'm starting to think the replacement for my NEX-3 won't be another NEX. Samsung are going in a direction I don't like with the NX series too, I don't want a touch screen instead of physical controls and a camera that has a phone built into it.. I might end up getting a Fuji as they are more like a 'real' camera, I'd get a Sony SLT camera, but I can't use the majority of my lens collection on one. Sad
