Well its all out. Very nice image quality as you would expect. Pretty bad and very loud shutter sound and equally bad battery life. ~300 pics.

You can always get some extra batteries or get the grip Wink

Loud shutter, I can live with that.

It's interesting that Sony move a away from the "NEX" branding for these cams, they are "Alpha" cams and the lenses are called "FE" lenses.

Only minors minuses so far, afaik:

  • no IBIS
  • loud shutter, shutter location, no electronic 1st curtain.
  • slow flash sync speed (160), much harder to nuke the sun.
  • suspect environmental sealing.

I'm more inclined toward the A7 (vs the A7r). I don't need 36mp and the hybrid AF sounds interesting.[/list]

I hate loud shutter sound but I will have to live with that Sad
NEX batteries are very cheap from china and small enough to carry a few around - not an big issue imho

"no electronic 1st curtain?"????
Sure? Shutter in the video sounds like it half-electronical like in NEX-5N
Accoring to spec on bhphoto it has an electronical shutter
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1008112-REG/sony_ilce7r_b_a7r_mirrorless_digital_camera.html
If it doesn't has a vibration free (half-electronical) shutter I won't buy it has I want to use it for demanding macros.

You will have to fight more with DOF on a FF. I think m43 is pretty nice for macro shooting, you don't have to stop down that much Wink

maybe i'm wrong, but to me a 'loud' shutter is an indication that the shutter mechanism creates a good amount of vibration. i can tell you that i just started using an epl5 and its shutter is very loud, which is bad enough, but also causes 'shutter shock', so much so that oly adds a 'shutter shock' feature that slows down capture by 1/8 second to mitigate the effect of shutter vibration ruining your capture.

Apparently the A7 has electronic 1st curtain but the A7r doesn't!

I'm leaning more and more toward the A7:

  • better AF (i know, i know Smile ): faster, hybrid, predictive control.
  • smaller file, 24MP is already way overkill for my prints.
  • faster FPS (2.5fps vs 1.5fps)
  • faster sync speed (250 vs 160)
  • electronic 1st curtain
  • cheaper

As long as first curtain works electronically the picture will be free of vibration, no matter how noisy the second curtain is

Oh craaaap noooo, I may have to cancel my preorder if that's true. Shutter vibration is almost a no-go for me! I almost can't believe that. Do you have a really reliable source for that?
When shooting >1:1 vibration would suck as hell with such a huge shutter

I would have to buy a whole flash equipment for balancing that issue Sad

I saw it on this page, however I'm not sure how reliable he is. Apparently, the A7r is really designed for landscape/architectural photography where it would usually sit on a tripod, while the A7 is a more portrait/photo-journalism/general-purpose photography.

Edit: saw it on sony's page. EFC for A7 but not for A7r.

Promising cameras it seems , but I can guarantee I won't have one Laughing On the other hand , I don't like the looks . I like the newest Olympus and I rather get one of those than these Sony if the design would be the first criteria. If the looks was derived from the Minolta X-700 or Konica FT-1 there was another thing. But it seems that Sony decided not to follow the Minolta and Konica heritage and the result is an ugly body designed by an untalented amateur. UGLY.
Of course , probably the technical quality is going to be very good .
But FF 20 or 36 MP ! Those lenses should be crazy good !
Good move for the market , let's hope that the competition is going to react , I am especially waiting Pentax ,they should move .Canon and Nikon have their FF lines interesting what they are going to move . I regret the absence on the market of some big tradition and noblesse brands like Contax ,Konica,Minolta in these interesting days.
And IBIS is something that I wanted . Konica Minolta had it Alfa had it and it seems that here Sony decided to end this line of evolution .By the way , this kills the alpha mount too.
