Carsten did you see it's size? Ha, finally a { affordable Rolling Eyes ) digital FF of the size 35mm film rangefinders used to be!
e.g. compared to m4/3 Panasonic GX1, see: http://i.imgur.com/aHaTt.jpg
( we have had some little chit chat about it in the NEX FF thread: http://forum.mflenses.com/nex-fullframe-t52074,start,15.html#1258760 and more info, e.g. a photo from the side at: http://www.sonyalpharumors.com/ )

I am excited about what this camera IS, and not disappointed by what it NOT is.
( btw. concerning VF: my NEX5N also comes without viewfinder, but the optional one is great, and makes the camera great! )

Certainly the RX1, even though being the cheapest newly available FF camera ( Leica M9: 6500, Nikon 800: 3000, Canon 5D mark 3: 3500, each body only in usd ) is too expensive for me. If it was for exchangeable lenses and incl. a EVF cost less than 2000 I would consider it, but that's not the point.

Important is that it is the first compact FF digital camera ( "below" M9, and amazing how small it is! )
This will have a big impact on the camera industry and put pressure on the other manufacturers.
It's a start to mirrorless FF cameras! There are more to come.

I fully agree !
I am just waiting for one to fit my pocket ( if you understand what I mean ) Laughing ...and I'm afraid it's going to be a loooong waiting Wink

andreas, sounds to me like youre excited about what it means and are indeed a little disappointed at what it isnt (no 'exchangeable lenses' no 'evf' and bad 'price point') Laughing

Tony no, not really, for three reasons:

my excitement about this first very small FF digital is real,
but I am on a two year circle buying new bodies, my 5N is only 10 months old
and invested in Pen-F lenses perfect for APS-C, not working on FF Wink

yes, your pen f lenses seem to be a really great match for you and your camera.

haha, yes, certainly for the camera, for me with some reservations.

Tony of course I agree that if it was for interchangeable lenses it sure would be much more attractive, and that the price is more high than wished for.
The critique of lack of VF imo is erroneous though. There will be both optional OVF and EVF available. As mentioned my NEX5N comes without EVF and so does e.g. Ricoh GXR you have experience with. Their optional EVFs are very nice and make them complete, I wouldn't have my 5N without it. Criticizing those cameras for not having a VF would be erroneous too.
I don't like that it doesn't have a decent grip. A bit retro style looks swell and may fit this particular camera but I would want "mine" to have a good, deep grip.

oh, i didnt know it would have an optional evf, thats a good thing. no one needs to pay extra for a 'sony' ovf as any of a million hotshoe 35mm ovf's made since 1930 would do the same job. Laughing

seriously though, you and i both think an evf is a valuable tool, and an articulating one even more valuable, so that is a necessary addition to this camera. i hope other companies respond soon, maybe by january CES?

Well-off photo amateurs with some competence but not enough dedication to mess with interchangeable lenses.
Similar market as the Leica X2 (which has APS-C sensor only).
Quite niche market indeed.
Perhaps Sony is just experimenting in order to implement FF into the Nex series.

I expect it is an experiment. They already have their 1-inch sensor they have put in a compact which makes more sense than FF in a compact.

I think this is the reason Orio, Sony will almost certainly make a loss on this camera. But they are looking a long way ahead. As I am at those prices, sadly. That's a nice looking camera, but I want a NEX FF.

I think this is the kind of reaction that people at Sony wants to cause.
Another reason could be testing some technologies (or technical solutions) on a small niche before throwing in a camera (an FF interchangeable lens mirrorless) about which everybody will be talking from the moment it will come out.

you better would, Tony! The optical viewfinder is at $599 Shocked......
it looks nice though http://www.dpreview.com/news/2012/09/12/Sony-Cyber-Shot-DSC-RX1-preview-video-full-frame-24MP-35mm-F2-camera-carl-zeiss
another $179 for the lens hood and $249 for a thumb grip, a niche market alright Wink

Mmm . . . interesting comments, and really good to know that readers can count on a thoroughly impartial and objective review . . .

Hello again! I am still here with the Sony event in California and today we rode the bus in to Carmel, CA and I am sitting here in one of the nicest hotel rooms I have ever stayed in at Carmel Valley Ranch. Amazing location and the room is mine for the next three days..so cozy comfy and nice. Doesnt feel like work..in fact, I feel guilty! . . . But the days have been long and packed full of fun, adventure and excitement because those of us lucky enough to be here have been enjoying all kinds of shooting events and it is only getting better tomorrow and Thursday.

My Granny used to talk about the wisdom of never biting the hand that feeds you . . . but I'm sure that Mr Huff has the moral fibre I would almost certainly lack as the recipient of such largesse (if indeed there actually was anything adverse to say about a product).
