How can I clean the dust I can see beyond the glass of the top of my Epson 4870?

Looking glasses wet cleaning tissue works well

Yes, but I'll have to disassemble the top of the scanner , I don't want to damage something there

I don't expect the glass will just lift out, but there should be clips or a seal holding it down.

Many of my pictures get dirt even if glass is clean so spot removals daily todo anyway , if you think risky to take out glass , just don't do it. Rather clean scanned pictures instead.
