This mirror lens was made in two versions: The first one (the one I own) model 55B and a second one model 55BB where Tamron wanted to do some improvements. The main differences are the size (55B is a little bigger), the tripod mount (the 55BB doesn't have it) and the close focusing precission, better on the later model.

After testing both, I kept finally the earlier version: I use these lenses for far focusing, and the tripod mount is a plus.

Mounted on the 5D:

With a BIG_IS adapter with focus confirmation (works well):

And the samples:

First spots, the parabolic aerial and the sundial:

Next spots: Pool ladder and float mattress:

Next spot: clothes lines:

So far, no "doughnut" bokeh at all. With a little care can be avoided (or selected Wink ).

Hope this helps in cleaning the bad reputation of these nice lenses.

Regards.
Jes.

Bad reputation?! The Tamron mirrors have a great reputation! They are some of the best mirrors ever made, and your photos demonstrate that well Smile

Thanks, Graham Smile
What I really meant was that the 55B and 55BB have got not so good reputation as the 300mm f/5.6 has, but they are good performers.

Jes.

I have never liked the bokeh on these things but I am very impressed with the IQ you got there. Surprised Thanks Smile

No, no, no; Jes is right - they have a terrrible, awful, dreadful reputation, which will drive the prices down until I can snap one up. Smile

Awesome, makes me want to get one! By the way, I like doughnut bokeh and could never get why people say it's ugly. Embarassed

great IQ on the 5D, I am not sure they would be so good on m4:3

Thanks for your comments colleagues.

Glad you like the quick tests I did, now I've to test it with the Samsung NX, the NEX, the Pentax-K and the Sigmas...

Very nice shots.

I have the 55BB model. It is really difficult to get sharp images near infinity with the 55BB, and I don't think any of my photos are as sharp. Focus throw of 55BB near infinity is very short, and no tripod mount.

Sure, you're right, these lenses are terrible and awful. Laughing Twisted Evil

I think this one is my worse one.

and on a m4/3 like the Pen e-p2, results are awful too, even with a monopod

It's time to make its prices lower... Wink

Really awful samples... Smile
I knew the pelican one, the bird one is also really.... (ops!).

(A pity the branch crossing along the bird's body)

Better to use it as a paperweight Wink

Yes !
That's why I use it as a paperweight, as it is unable to remove branches. Laughing

Something just doesn't feel right here. You're two stories up and you can get that entire pool in frame? Even though I'm used to the 55BB on a µ4/3 (quarter-frame) there's no way I could get more than just the that pool-ladder in frame on my camera (suggesting about a 1/12 or less the frame size you're getting) I would need to be 10 or 12 stories up to get the whole pool in-frame. All your other shots look way too wide too - even taking into account it's on a 5D. Also you're getting lens curvature (pin-cousion distortion) on the 55BB/55B... isn't that like, impossible?

You sure you're posting the right image set from the right lens and not a 100mm or 150mm or so lens?

Something looks just too wrong here. What's up?

And the EXIF is pretty funky here too. Very confusing!

Jes shows us the entire scenery with his compact and circles the points where he'll shoot with the Tamron SP 500 f8 mounted on his 5D.

Exifs of the 5D shot shows 50mm because of the adapter chip which is set on 50mm.
