Can my 500V scan 4x5's?

yes, it has a mode when you can cut any size of frame. I use it when film is overlapped or it has non-regular frame space. It scan full strip in one block , this is good for 4x5 also.

Do I need anything to put it in? A frame or such?

V500 biggest film scan area is only 6x12cm. 4x5 would need custom holder to scan in parts, stitch with software.

That is sort of what I've been reading. What scanner below 300 dollars would do it? Used would not turn me off.

A used Epson 4870, 4990 or V700/V750 will do 4x5. You should be able to get the first two for under $300. You might even be able to find a used V7xx for under $300 now.

I just got the V500 and now I need a V700? Ouch!!

Purely to do 4x5" and 9x12cm, I picked up an old Epson 2450 for twenty euros. It's fine at the job.
