LED ring light?

Inspired by some of the photography I have seen on this forum recently, I want to try some close-up and macro photography. Lighting is a problem in the dark evenings, so I was looking at macro lighting.

I can't stretch to a ring flash, but one of those LED versions will be within reach next week when I sell some old bicycle parts. Are they any good, in the collective experience?

Thanks for any tips.

Graham

Bought soldered leds as yard goods and mounted a certain length into an old sun hood. Could be also an yoghurt pot or something else where you put some additional aluminium foil into it.

Do you have a DSLR? In that case a Pringles Flash Diffusor would be a great and super low cost solution. It won't help you with focusing, but it does provide additional light and even TTL metering (if your camera supports it, I'm not a flash expert, so...)

Ah, I missed the *ist D part (it's not in his signature). So in that case all Graham needs is to eat a lot of Pringles (sorry for the overweight Wink) and some time and he's all set Laughing Laughing

I saw a ready made battery powered LED light ring in a garden center the other day, it fits around the pole of those large umbrella things that posh people have on their patios.
I think they might be a bit small though, but maybe they might fit around a small lens ?

For DIY LED ring lights, look at the "Angel Eyes Headlight LED Ring White"

http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=angel+eyes+headlight+led+ring+white&_sacat=0&_odkw=headlight+led+ring

Different diameters nest inside each other for more light. 12 volt operation.
