Well i have cleaned a few aperture blades in the past with lighter fluid but found that in just a few days they where back to being stuck again, so i was servicing a lens the other day and remembered i had ECSP spray, now this stuff is amazing i once spilt coke on my mac keyboard and it was all sticky a bit of this and was as good as new, it evaporates very quickly and cuts through grease like there is nothing else.
So i sprayed all of the aperture on my pancolar then proceded to wipe down with lots of fresh cotton buds the result an aperture that works super smooth and after 10 days is still working

You should be able to get it from Farnell, or Maplins or online

A link to the stuff

How is it with coatings?

I have used some kind of electrical cleaner that worked great in the past. Can't remember the brand but it was good stuff. I didn't use it on a lense but was impressed with it. I'm thinking it was CRC brand.

I would imagine pretty good as its used on Motherboards and will not need to strip the varnish on those, I have an old domiplan lens thats used for spares i will soak the lens tonight in it and see if it damages the coating

It'll very likely improve the Domiplan... Laughing

Even with his post, I don't think it was a good idea to put this without a smiley. Confused

Most lighter fluid contains a lot of crap and it's not volatile enough to my taste.
There is a lot difference between the lighter fluid brands bye the way.

According to the Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) the ECSP's aerosol liquid is 95-99% pentane and 1-5% isopropanol

Pentane is also an alkane (like used in lighter fluids) but much much more volatile. It's boiling point is around 36°C.

Here in Germany you can buy a mixture of Pentane and Hexane (called "Wundbenzin" or "Benzinium DAB" which is very low boiling petrol ether (aka alkane mixture) for ~10€ and isopropanol for ~7€ per liter in any pharmacy.

Isopropanol, also called 2-propanol, rubbing alcohol or IPA is already a good cleaner for itself and very good also for cleaning sensors etc,, as long as it's absolutely clean. But it's not as volatile as pentane/hexane and not as good for dissolving sticky "heavy oils" you may sometimes find in older helicoids as pentane, hexane, lighter fluid or any other alkane(-mixtures)

Bye the way, don't buy IPA in these tiny bottles with build-in-pipettes you may find at the pharmacy. The "ball-heads" on the pipettes are containig flexibilizer which is solouble in IPA and contaminating your solvent. This may result in (removable) tiny schlieren or stains on you sensor, lens, etc..

If you you are located in Europe can I think you can get all these chemicals also on Amazon or somewhere else in the internet:
Mixture of Pentane and Hexane:

Isopropanol
http://www.amazon.de/fischar-2-Propanol-technisch-1-L/dp/B002KDKQGS/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1326158690&sr=8-3

You can also buy strong aqueous Ammonia for 3€/l there which is sometimes also very helpful to clean zinc
http://www.amazon.de/Ammoniakl%C3%B6sung-25-1-L/dp/B002IJL5AK/ref=pd_sim_dr_6
(See http://forum.mflenses.com/found-a-very-good-cleaner-for-camera-restoration-t44844.html what it can do Wink)

And you can buy Oxalic acid on Amazon, which (least I heard that, never used it) is a wonder weapon for cleaning aluminium when dissolved in hot water.

It's a helluva price for IPA in an aerosol can.

Yes, of course Smile
Hmm is it a pump spray of is there at least a blowing gas (which is not mentioned in the MSDS)?

You can also buy IPA on Ebay very cheap bye the way.

For those in the UK, Maplin do a litre of IPA in a can for about £15. Use that with some Distilled water (5L, halfords, about a fiver), and I use it in a small "spritz" spray the lives in a pocket in my bag. I have never failed to remove any nasties with that, an antistatic brush and a Microfibre cloth.

Full Disclosure:- I work for Maplin. I did however buy it long before I worked for them.
